Disaster............

Front speaker on passenger gone kaput due to too much AC/DC.

I know there are probably plenty of nutters out there who have tinkered with the sound system. I have a fairly standard Sony head unit with multi changer, any recommendations as to what speakers to put in?

I believe my old Saab had holes suitable for a 10cm and tweeter, so I had some Blaupunkt components in there.

Not very hard to fit, but the plastic speaker grills are tricky to pry off, can be done, but excessive force may result in snapping plastic :|

A Haynes manual shows it being done I think.

Yep, the holes are there for a four inch (100mm) mid and tweeter (almost any would fit).
The sound quality is quite variable between makes, and so is the price. My advice is to actually listen to what you intend to buy. Sometimes a high price tag isn't justified.

Totally. I work in the audio industry and I'm often appalled at the prices of some aftermarket gear.
OK, over-generalisation, but look for:
- bigger magnets
- 25mm not 19mm dia voice coil
- treated rather than plain paper cones
- rubber not foam surround
Then listen if you can. But bear in mind that LF will be boosted when up against the screen, so pay attention to midrange clarity on voice - both male and female. Radio 4 is a good source. DO NOT listen to radio 1 on any account - the bass is boosted and the signal compressed to ****.

WHen I changed my 9K S system back in mid '99 my front speakers were blown too so I replaced them from a In Car specialist in Leics whose number I got out of In Car HI-Fi magazine and who beat Halfords OTT prices by up to 50% for Bostin Acoustics (never heard of them...me neither before I bought...their American apparantly) And they are 4' components and fit lovely where the old Saab ones go. Now they just sit idle in my cupboard under the stairs waiting for me to get another 9K that needs new speakers. But the sound off them was superb and I didn't have rear speakers attached as they'd blown too so just front speakers and they sounded fine...just missing bass as they where only designed really for mid range being so small.

100W Clarions installed, Angus Young now blaring out at top volume again, Cover easy to get off, not so easy to get on again. Jointed socket requires for two bolts nearest window

£35 poorer but happy
