exhausts...genuine or not?

1892 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  James
The exhaust I have on my 8v turbo has started to blow, so its time for a new front section (sounds great but massive loss in power!). I have read different opinions on the vertues of genuine verses pattern exhausts....do I spend 1/8th the cars value on a genuine SAAB exhaust or are there good, but cheaper, pattern exhausts avaliable?

Ther are plenty of pattern exhausts out there but I've never had much success with thm. FWIW I'd stick with the genuine Saab part.
If there's a silencer in the part you need to replace, I'd always go for the Saab part, having had poor experiences with aftermarket parts. They never seem to give the same performance as the genuine part and some have been really bad. If it's just a pipe, I can't see that any manufacturer can screw that up as long as it fits properly.
Yes it has the silencer in the front part but no cat. It's amazing how much power is lost through a small hole. I have a split in the silencer along a folded seam that has opened due to rust and is only about 20mm long but at a guess I have lost 20-30 bhp and the turbo is not working AND I just went out and found a large screw sticking out of my 3 week old tyre...right on the edge of the tread area, so i guess thats scrap now

I had exactly the same thing on my 90 last week. The tyre is only a couple of months old and wasn't repairable due to the puncture being close to the edge of the tread. And it's a winter tyre so not available in England, I'm told. We don't get winter here, apparently
I'd ordered them from MyTyres and they ship from Glasgow.

Anyway, my friendly Saab specialist fitted a tube and all is hunkey-dorey. Not sure if this would be acceptable for a higher-performance tyre.

They can if they have convoluted bends in them, like the rear section on C900s
The pattern rear section I bought from ECP for Debs' vert doesn't quite site right.

Done a bit of phoning around today and found that some main dealers are having a clear-out of classic parts. One quoted £80 +vat and postage for the front section (normally £117 + vat)I managed to get a genuine set of HT leads for £10!!!!!!!!!!!! (rrp £68.00+vat )+ a rear bumper for £40 (rrp £379.00+ vat)I have seen 2nd hand bumpers sell for more!!!Worth a chat with your local dealer to see whats up for grabs

My 'new' 900 had a pattern exhaust a couple of years ago, together with a genuine Saab downpipe (presumably the bit with the cat in it?).

The exhaust looks fine but booms a bit at just under 4,000rpm, which I expect a genuine Saab exhaust wouldn't do. Initially I thought it was a wheel bearing, except the noise goes away when you drop the clutch ...
