On the subject of engine oils, I think my Aero has been on mineral oil or semi-sythetic for its life thus far (80k). Is there any point in changing it to a fully sythetic, or just sticking with a decent semi?

I'm under the impression that it's not a good idea to switch from mineral/semi-synth to fully-synth after any significant mileage. You will start to use a lot of oil etc as the fully-synth is thinner.

I use Mobil S 10W40 (semi-synth) from France. Something like £12 for 5 litres. Mobil 1 is about £18 for 4 litres and it is a better grade (5W50).

Cheers,

Liam.

I was told same as Liam about swopping oils.

I use fully synthetic for my 9000 turbo's, and GTX for my old non turbo.

I get a cheap brand of fully synthetic oil but change it when oil goes dark, probably every 5000(ish) miles

Only one way to find out if it will start burning oil, and that is to try the fully synthetic stuff.

When I changed my older Saab from mineral to Semi synthetic at 100k it never burned any oil.

>>Mine (aero )used to run on silkolene semi but now on mobil1 fully synth. This was recommended to me by saab gb (their technical line at Marlow)

Funny... that Saab GB recommend Mob1 because several Saab dealers have told me that Saab branded oil is NOT Mob1!! And the Saab Owners Handbook states only use Saab Oil!

Also, worth noting is that some Saab dealerships actually only use Mob1 for servicing customer cars!

Better to use a fully synthetic oil (Mobil 1 Motorsport is what I use) for a 9000 Turbo. If you've modded your 9000 Turbo, it's also worth servicing your 9000 every 3k miles to ensure maximum protection. (Of course it depends what you've done in terms of mods). ;o)

Mobil 1 Motorsport is 15W50. I would be worried about cold start protection with a cold number of 15.

And if you're going to change you oil every 3000 miles then there is very little point using fancy oil. Complete overkill IMO (it's only a Saab!).

i've used mobil 1 fully synthetic in lots of fast cars. i started with mobil 1 at 95,000 miles in both a BMW 535 and my current 1989 9000 turbo! oil consumption zero. if the engine is in good condition then the better the oil the better the protection it affords. if the engine is cooked it is too late to worry about the oil.

very good prices from teesside autotech who are in thornaby (sandwiched between middlesbrough and stockton) and do mail order (01642)617626. they are BMW experts, bosch injection specialists and nice guys. shame i live 300 miles away from them now!

Before switching to mob 1 I checked whethet swapping was a good idea. They said it will not harm it but might find any leaks waiting to show up. It hasn't, and after 4000 miles, it hasn't used a drop

I've been told that on high mileage cars it's better not to use synthetic oils - I tend to use a main brand oil eg Castrol, but flush the engine when changing oil & do so @ 4-5k miles, before the oil breaks down & gunks up
