after fitting a new head unit in my carlsson ( easy job straight swap kenwood for kenwood ) i found that all my dash board lights had gone out
i checked the fuses in the glove box under the heading " instruments " but it was ok
please help , electrics are really not my thing

Is there any chance you knocked the dial that dims the dash lights?
The 9-5 has a night panel button that turns most off too, does the 9000 have a similar button
Yes, the common one is to have knocked the dimmer to it's minumum setting (something I often do just starting the car...
Other that that, it's the dimmer where I'd start to check that there was 12v in and something out (depending on setting).
If it has no 12v feed then that needs chasing back to the fuse box, if there is a supply there, then you nedd to chase forward.
