I have a '92 CS Carlsson with 150k miles and a few problems. ABS & TCS lights on dash - when driving the car sometimes goes into "limp home" mode with the electronic throttle disabling (very annoying) and a leaky water pump which my laocal garage (non SAAB dealer) cannot fix. I want to keep the car but do not wish to spend vast amounts of cash at a main dealer - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No direct help, but I advise you are very wary about hints to go to various Saab 'specialists. Most I know are just as good (or bad!) at high charges as main dealers.
Does anyone know of any exceptions?

If you use a SAAB specialist one of the advantages is that they are prepared to fit reclaimed & refurbished parts, which can cut the cost of SAAB motoring considerably. And the labour rates are almost certain to be considerably lower. The downside is that they don't necessarily have all the v. expensive tech equipment, but the specialist that I use gets a good rate at a dealer when he needs to use their facilities. Best of both worlds.

I am thinking of taking the car to 2 stroke, leaving it with them for a week, give them a budget and asking them to do a complete overhaul....it this a good idea? They are a long way from me but appear to know what they are doing.

There you go Ian, a recommendation closer to home. Sounds like a better option than 2 stroke.....I personally wouldn't let 2 stroke work on my car, but others seem to have had no problem. TrentSaab are closer than 2 stroke if you were still willing to travel further a field. Take Marks advice and give the man a ring before you make your mind up.

Sounds like it could be a bad earth connection someplace. Although ABS sensors are prone to failure on older cars - but not sure if it would have the other widespread effects.

Bangor Saab maindealer (Nth Wales is your closest option - but aargghh rather expensive! And probably not experienced on older car type problems (although they have been running about 7 years), due to main delaer prices acting as a deterent.

I am sure a Saab specialist would know likely causes and ID problem fast - but wouldn't go as proposed (i.e. leave car for week, and ask for complete overhaul) to any garage as it's a bit like offering a blank cheque!

***update*** The "limp home" problem has been fixed. I contacted a friend of a friend who works at a saab dealer who "for a few pound notes in the back pocket" traced the problem to a vacum valve located on the bulk head. He also changed the timing chain on my 153k Carlsson, rewired the cooling fan switch a gave the car a service for £195.00 - a steal or what !!!!
