Bro's 9K CSE Auto, 102K, fine until this morning when front drive gears refuse to engagee

, reverse, parking, Neutral all OK - problem just with front drive engagement....oil clean as new, no funny noises!

obviously there is no problem with the apparent condition of the fluid. Is there a burnt smell to the fluid (put some on your fingers and smell it).

When was the fluid last changed? When was the filter last cleaned/changed?

Has full Saab history and always serviced. Records show complete auto box oil change at 92000 miles. When selecting drive no engagement. Push accelerator and at high revs get some engagement and the car moves. Auto oil at right level, clean and no smell. Does anyone know of any good auto gearbox place in Croydon that they would recommend?

What do you mean by "complete" oil change? How many miles has the car done now?

The car has done 102K. At 92K miles the auto box oil was changed by the main dealer.

The only problem with doing a fluid change on the auto box is that you only ever get about 1/3rd of the fluid oil when you do it. You should ideally have a triple fluid change done.

I did a double fluid and filter change on mine and a just under a year later it developed the same fault as yours.

Is yours like that permenatly? Or does it have good days and bad days?

If the autobox only changes 1/3 of the contents per change, three changes still leaves about 1/3 of the old oil in there.

You need 8 changes to get the old oil content less than 5%!!!

There are garages that remove the ATF under pressure, a kind of dyalilisis machine for gearboxes. Thus changing all the fluid in one operation. (No idea where though, sorry)

The problem started for the first time a few days back, I drove the three minutes to my destination after it first occurred, parked up and have not tried to drive it again, instead seeking to find an auto box specialist in the croydon area. I had not considered it to be potentially intermittent. For overhaul, ZF agents are quoting about £1800, and others between £1000 and £1600. A Saab dealer quoted £2600. Was hoping someone here would make a recommendation ...

I got mine done at BK Transmissions, Overton, near Basingstoke 07798 842921, 01256 771577. Not too near Croydon I'm afraid, but they did a good job for me. Sorry not to be more help.

There is a ZF agent in Hailsham that will do it for £1500.
