I found with surprise that my '87 had not relays to feed the headlights. I noticed it when the high beam didn't worked anymore and some thin smoke coming out of the switch...
So I put on a relay and the high beam returned to work, much more brilland than before. The high beam light is whiter than the low beam one. If I bring the + of the battery direcly to the low beam bulb, when they are on, they appear more brilliant. Now I plan to put a relay for the low beam, too.

Hope this helps somebody.

I agree. I did the same on my '87 after it melted two dip-switches. I fixed one of the switches and added the relays. I never had a problem again. I couldn't believe Saab hadn't fitted relays for the headlamps.

I don't know whether it made the lights brighter because the reflectors were very dull anyway.
