If you think that's difficult, try taking off a Renault 16 front suspension wishbone. (Hint... engine out, my laddie). Well, almost.
Seriously, though, I think most manufacturers are guilty of this - only interested in initial assembly time and cost. Then, make the special tools for all the dealers who pass on the charges to do the jobs. Easy money!!

I know what you mean! In my experience as a mechanic, almost any job is easier with a ramp. And it also makes a big difference to be in the warm /dry / have good lighting and have the right kit to hand. I constantly get frustrated when I try even the smallest jobs at home. What would take 5 mins at work under ideal conditions, always seems to take hours at home!!!!! That's when the £5000+ investment in hand tools alone, by the average mechanic, really pays dividends. We usually have the right bent spanner to get at that awkward nut / bolt etc!!!!
I was tempted to try to repair my heated seat at home this weekend, but I've decided now to wait until I get a quiet time at work. There's nothing worse than starting a job like that and it starts peeing down etc!
I bet it's really easy to fit the alternator when the engine's on a bench prior to fitting to the car!!!!
I wish you the best of luck!
Pete.

Ahh Zepelin, but tucked away behind the engine means that it is much better protected from water ingress, unless you decide to drive through a river!

But I agree it's a pian to get at - so I paid £20 odd quid for a garage to fit my replacement alternator last time I needed the job done!

NB: I bought a brand new Bosch unit via someone who worked at Bosch for approx £80 (employee discount?), whereas normally £160!
The same unit is fitted to Mercs (for a '93 CDE alternator unit)

Thanks for the info. I have just discovered the new whine in the engine bay as being the alternator bearing (yes, using the old fashioned method of holding the tip of a long screwdriver against the offending device, and the handle against the ear). Anyway, a job to go straight to the workshop, rather than one for myself.

Cheers

well,i got alternator fixed...new brushes fitted, and the clever mechanic did not have to remove alternator.....beats me how he did it though. 40 quid inc. brushes/worth every penny.

I have also just had to replace the brushes unit on the alternator of my 89 Carlsson..... did so for about 50 quid incl spares at my local specialist in Cambridge.... By the sounds of it, it was £50 well spent!

Apparently it was the small holding unit itself rather than the brushes it holds that had failed.... perhaps a consequence of a previous encounter with street flooding late last year which had temporarily prevented charging of the battery.

The main problem now is that i seem to have a barren spot between exactly 3-4k revs between which there is a great deal of hesitation and kangarooing.... until the revs reach 4k then it flies off again!! Boost seems to be unaffected throughout.

The car was laid up because of the alternator problems for a few weeks with the battery removed.

Has anyone had similar problems after a lay-up...
