Hi,
Concerning mu '96 CSE with ACC2
I have just had my system re gassed and it works eratically as follows:
Upon startup the compressor engages and produces cool air. If i set to "Low" it will run for as long as I care to stand next to it. However if I up the temp control to HI the compressor still runs. If I hit ECON, the compressor then disengages. If I then hit AUTO back on the compressor will not engage whatever seting on the control. When driving the other day the unit produced cool air for a while and then gave up producing cool air for the remainder of the journey. I am confussed! Any ideas of anyone? Much appreciated.

Do a recalibration on it, can't remember which buttons you press but someone more knowledgable will be along shortly.

thanks, I have done that - no errors logged.
Surely the compressor should not stay on during HI setting?

The compressor is not just there for cooling , it also reduces the moisture content of the air, on a cold winter morning having the ACC on will clear the windscreen quicker as it does this very function on the air blown to clear the windscreen. It is not only cooling the air hence Climate control.

Is it more likely to do this on a hot day? Does it work fine again if you leave it for half an hour? If so, have a look here to see how I cured a similar problem (well, the air-con specialist cured it, but it was a simple procedure once I knew what I was looking for). I also had to do this on my CSE as soon as I bought it. Same symptoms driving through Central London on a hot day, the day after I bought the car.

Yes,symptoms similar to what you mention, although I have only had the ac up and running since last Thursday.

I have not checked the air gap - but I know that I have no shims left!! So if it is too much how can I reduce it?
I recovered the clutch plate off another compressor which was sold on ebay with the description "refurbished last year" but it came with a worn plate and no shims. Just like the one I was replacing, great!

I don't think that I can buy a clutch plate alone can I?
I will check the air gap tonight.

air gap is 0.7mm

It seemed to work fine tonight! I had the voltmeter out ready but it behaved and I gave up and left it for the time being.

my acc.appears to be not working and i have just removed three shims,great info.bill,but it still aint working......gap is about .8mm any ideas.
