just about to go on hols to france in the aero... - I thought I would invest in a spare thermostat but I'm not sure which to get:

Its a 1996 Aero and Elkparts quoted me on an 82 deg. unit. I had thought it should be an 89 deg item in my car...and I want to get it right.

Any thoughts experience? The car has done 90k miles - anyone have thermostat failure in their car, or am I being paranoid?

Going on hols to an even hotter country, I'd tend towards the cooler stat. It can't do any harm.

In very general terms:

89 deg stat= warmer running, better economy
82 deg stat= cooler running, better performance but poorer economy

ahh - thanks - but now I'm a little confused - I'll probably just get the 82 deg. item as it's for backup anyway. I'd be interested to know what is in the car already/what it is 'meant' to have.
Don't want to loose perfomance or economy (i.e. I'm happy the way it is) - Driving just a touch under triple figures for 4 hrs gave me (what I think) is an astounding 31mpg (real - not just the computer).

I'd have thought you were running an 82c stat. Most (all) Aero's came with 82's whcih is why their temp guages sit slightly below horizontal normally.
