Up to 93 there was no synchro, from 94 I thinkl there was.
On trick is to select 1st and then reverse to get everything moving at the right speed an aligned. (1st and reverse are both fixed gears cut into the input shaft, although reverse used straight cut gears).
My '90 2.3 CDT started to clunk into reverse slightly first thing in the morning, but eventually would crunch at any time of day. A dealer where I was looking at trading in for an Aero diagnosed a faulty clutch and wanted to knock a few hundred quid off the trade-in value. I took it to another dealer who gave me a price without even unlocking the doors.
I don't kow whether it would eventually have refused to go into reverse. I didn't have any problems at all with the forward gears.
