Will the car make it across the country?

Acquiring 1998 900 Turbo Convertible in SF. Driving it across country to Boston. Common problems to look for?`

Hello. I'm helping someone move across the country, by driving their 98 900 Turbo Saab Convertible.

The other car being driven is a 2002 Volvo V70 Cross Country.

When and if we reach the east coast, i'm going to be keeping the car.

Off the top of my head this sounds like an insane trip to make. I recently lost my mother 2/23/2023, so I was more than eager to embark on a journey.

Hopefully I can gain some knowledge and known problems to look for by joining this forum....

The car has 205k miles on it.. It's an automatic and looks to be in great shape. I'm also planning on creating a youtube channel with this content being my first video.

The car as / is runs and drives with no known issues other than it pulls to the right a little bit. * Actually it does have one issue, that i found out about today. That there is a small oil leak. This is how it was worded to me:

** there is a tiny pool of oil at the end of the cam.
It doesn't leak enough to register
between oil changes.......

Anyone have insight to this issue?

What are know problem areas with this car? What should I be doing to prepare for a trip like this, about 3K miles !>?

I'm going to change the oil and do a partial drain and fill of the transmission fluid...

I'm writing this on 4/13 @ 4:37p EST..
My flight leaves 4/14 BOS to SFO @ 8amEST

It's really a simple fix. There is a small plastic cap that cover the end of the cam shaft. it get old and brittle and shrinks just a hair from the heat cycles of the motor. HOT?COLD?HOT COLD and it lets oil pass by. the part is readily avail. the new part is aluminum. take off any remains of old cap, clean the area to remove any residual oil, it usually collects on top of the head directly below camshaft end. just put a film of rtv on new cap and tap in place with a small plastic hammer or wooden mallet, should not take more than ten minutes max. i did my 9-3 and i now need to do my son;s 93. Enjoy your trip, that is on my bucket list.

I would buy some AT205 and add that to the engine oil. That should help with any leaks that might pop up along the way. It's actually works pretty well when I've used it in my 86 SPG. It's in the power steering box as well. Stop the major leak. I would buy some AC Delco coolant tabs at those to the coolant system as a preventative thing. In case you get a leak on the way, it might be a lifesaver. The biggest issue will tend to be plastic and rubber pieces that can break and crack and fail, especially vacuum lines and things like that. You may want to bring some vacuum line with you just in case it's pretty cheap insurance. I've done a few cross-country tips on unknown cars and had pretty good luck once I got back. I'm always surprised I made it because of the issues I found. If you don't know the service history, you might want to bring some plugs wires your filter and just replace them before you even go.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the cars and something will fail eventually. It might be a good idea to get it inspected before you head back. Might be a few hundred dollars but might save you a big headache.

It's advised to check the auto completely before embarking on a long trip. Check the thickets, tires, and other factors to insure they're working duly. also, you should check the oil painting, coolant, and the rest of the fluids to make sure they're at the correct situations. It's also recommended to replace any worn or damaged corridor before embarking on the trip. As for the oil painting leak, it's recommended to consult a handyperson to determine the cause and have it fixed. Eventually, it's important to have a plan for staying safe on the long trip and make sure to have exigency inventories and a spare tire.
Does the owner have a current service history on the car and what was done? My biggest worry would be vacuum lines get old and brittle and pop off but the car won't run or run really poorly. It's a very cheap thing to fix and you can do it yourself. Just require some rubber hose. Any mechanic can look at the car. They're not that special that way when you're looking for obvious failures such as a head gasket or valve cover leak. Minor leak wouldn't stop me from driving the car. Given its age it's probably going to have some type of leak. It would be good if you could get on a sob list and ask somebody local to look at the car for you for you fly out.

I have the 97 900 coupe.. The 98 came with the best options. All she needs is a thorough oil change and a good cleaning of the oil pan every so often.. Swap out the vacuum lines for good silicon ones.. and use 91+ octane. She won't let you down. A convertible Saab with classic lines... should be nothing but smooth rides.
