I know that the APC solenoid has three hoses: one is for the boost (compressor outlet), another one that goes to the wastegate actuator (and is communicant to the first one when the solenoid opens), then another from the compressor inlet.
The question is: what's this third hose for? The solenoid should work even without it.

No, I think it is close- when the wastegate is open, there is pressure in the actuator. In order for it to close, that pressure has to be released. The pressure flows back up the W tube in this case and out via the R tube.

Remember the "normal" operation of the solenoid is effectively to prevent the actuator from seeing any pressure until a preset point.
