Hi All. I just bought a 2006 Saab 95 Tid, 1.9L very cheap. the guy that owned it gave me a great story how he was imigrating and the diesel filter needed to be change and it would sort out the low power and the misfire on idle. It didn't
This is the problem. When you start the car it runs very rough at idle. Like a petrol car with a bad spark plug. Push down the accelerator and very dead in power until it hit 2500 rpm and then its like a rocket. Once you keep it above 2500 in any gear its like a sports car but below 2500rpm very dead like its running on 2 cylinders. Its showing up no faults. Now twice as I was driving hard, the car lost power and loads of smoke, a whitish/blue smoke, from the exaust like you've broken a pistion ring. Pull into the side of the road turn the car off for about 10 seconds, started it again and the problem is gone. No more smoke but the rough idle and the low power at low revs is still there. It sounds like the EGR valve but the mechanic took it out and cleaned it and said its ok. Thanks

The 1.9TiD's do have a reputation for rough idle espcially when first started from cold but this does sound rather worse than normal. What I'd try:

new air filter
new fuel filter
Try a couple of tanks of Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate see it that makes any difference, both (are said) to have more/better cleaning addatives and Shell V-Power transformed the tickover on my 1.9TiD.

EGR valves are one of the 'usual suspects' and can be bad and not throw OBD fault codes.

Query - did your workshop dissamble the EGR to clean throughly or did they just remove and clean the bits you can see without taking appart? Do they have a TECH II - with this device its possible to remove the EDG and test its opperation by leaving it plugged into the loom and sending commands to it to open/close from the TECH II. This may give some clues.

Hope that helps, just my 2p.

Hi thanks for your reply. The following is something i had wrote on another form in reply to a guy that had spent 2500 on a load of stuff and the problem wa still there afterwards. and not I haven't the egr taken apart completely yet. It's my next move..... "I was told to put this cleaning stuff in the tank and drive it hard for awhile and it will regenerate the particle filter which could be the cause. I didn't think so because of the huge power it has once it goes over 2000 rpm. It the city its a nightmare because you have to be reving it a little pulling away from traffic lights so it doesn't cut out. I've had a back flow check done with the injectors where the run pipes of the return of the injectors, into 4 calibrated glass jars, for a certain lenght of time and they should be the same. Now there was a difference but personelly it wasn't huge, 2 were the same and lets say if you were measuring in spoonfuls. 2 jars had 10 spoonfuls, 3rd jar had 15 spoonfuls and the 4th had 8 spoonfuls. Again because of the high performance of the car over 2000 rpm I can't see this effecting the car at low revs. Now when I say I drove the car hard with the injecter and filter cleaner in the tank, I mean I drove the **** out of it. I use to race motorcycles and I red lined it everywhere for 30 to 60 minutes on a few occasions. If it was a fly wheel problem I can assure you it would have ended up gone through the sun roof. I haven't done a proper check myself yet as I'm working away all the time but next week I'm giving it all my time until its solved. Any suggestions would greatly help. Sorry about the long winded version.
Regards
