Hi,
I recently bought a 97 P reg 9000 aero, its covered 173000 miles, so barely run in .
Anyway, I'm having a couple of problems with it.
Firstly, the engine is cutting out under hard acceleration, at first i suspected fuel problems, but the engine just stops, for maybe 1/2 a second, not a gradual fade, so i'm begining to think it isn't that.
Secondly, the steering feels vague, as if there is a dead area in the center of the steering, is this normal?

Any help gratefully received.

Also, could anyone recomend a good saab garage in South West Scotland?

This could be the overboost cut out - protects the engine from too much boost. Hopefully its just because it needs the boost recalibrating - search this forum for more info.

Steering should not feel vague (well I guess it all depends on what you are normally use to). Worth checking for play in the steering system, rack clamp bushes, track rod ends etc.

Your cutting out under acceleration is most likely to be an overboost problem. Can you confirm that the boost gauge is well into or towards the end of the red when it happens?

Basically it's happening because the wastegate on the turbo isn't opening. This could be becuase it is mechanically seized (rare for it to seize shut though) or because the actuator isn't getting boost pressure. Either your APC control solenoid is faulty or there's a leak in the pipework.

As Mark says, overboost, I would put money on the BPCV being faulty.

Vague steering, sounds like my Aero when I bought it, turned out the front wishbone bushes were shot, so check these out.

cut-out on boost can also be due to spark plugs that are simply worn out (gap too wide).

Know when they were last changed?

Well, an update...
It went into the dealers who sold me the car, local saab place, and after 2-3 trips backwards and forwards where they claimed they couldn't recreate the problem, and after they say they cleaned out the throttle body, and also re gapped the plugs etc, i collected it and it was still doing the same thing. I asked them to send someone out with me so i could show them the proble,1/4 mile away it started to cut out, seems to be anytime after high boost it does it, then continues to do it everytime i accelerated.
Back we go to the dealer, they say they will have another look in the morning when the turbo has cooled down, that was friday.
Yesterday i called to find out what was happening, and they suddenly discovered that the dump valve was sticking, the very thing i had told them initially was probably the problem thanks to advice from here.
Long and short of it was they ordered a new one in without telling me, spoiling my chance to get an uprated one fitted free of charge :-(

So i am now waiting for the car to come back and see if they have fixed it.
They have also checked all the bushes and can find no fault, but they adjusted the toe-in, and that seems to have sharpened the steering a lot.
Will keep you posted on what happens.

My car has done 191K and suffers from vague steering as well. I know for a fact my upper rack is work and in need of a refurb. So yours might be suffering in the same way.

Right, i got the car back today, and they seem to have sorted the overboost problem, unfortunatly by fixing this they seem to have robbed me of some power maybe it was getting too much boost before? anyway, it doesnt seem to be cutting out now, and i guess the standard boost is ok for a while
the steering still feels vague, better than before, but it still doesnt feel as good as i would like, so i guess its time for a suspension upgrade, poly bushes etc, any sugestions as to what ones to go for?
