Back in the 70's I sold new Saabs at a multi-franchise company.(the others were Reliant Scimitar and the fledgling Honda)We wanted to take on board Mercedes Benz, but before we were allowed to we were told we would have to give up Saab.In 1975 it was the 99 range of course, but even then Merc.recognized the way Saab were going and perceived them as "a conflict of interest" What they would have made of the 9000,ten years later, god only knows, but they would probably have had palpitations,as that model,in most respects, equalled the build quality and far surpassed the performance of their compact cars! They allowed us to keep Honda as they were toy cars that posed no threat!!!
