93 Sportwagon 1.9 TID 150 bhp 2006 now at 61,000miles

I love my Saabs and this one is not my first 93 Sports but this one I am slowly having to rebuild bit by bit!

Air conditioning condensor holed. Too low down and exposed. New condensor fitted and protected by a £20 peice of Aluminium diamond holed and ziptied behing grill. An easy and cheap way to save £250. I recommend to all.

Alternator replace at 58,000. Initially the nationwide Autocentre fits the wrong one and the car fails to start after three days etc. See my other post, if this happens to you ensure they fit the 130 amp version not the Vauxhall 105 amp! £250

Now at 61,000 miles the water pump seizes and causes the cambelt to shred when my wife is in the outside lane of the Motorway in the dark in rush hour traffic. Engine cuts out after a flash of a warning on the SID. She just manages to get the car to the hard shoulder. The car is at the Independent Saab specialist and is about to be assessed, but it doesn't look good for the internals or cheap. There was nothing wrong with the water pump when the car was serviced only 5 months ago and this is not a serviceble part. I would recommend to all to get it checked properly when your car is serviced to save expensive repairs. I am yet to find out how much mine will cost. Due to the nature of this failure I have reported this to VOSA and the vehicle Safety Branch as having spoken to SAAB this is not the first time this has happened but VOSA knew nothing about these kind of failures and how serious it could have been.

If the car was older I would get shot of this one now, unfortunately I really like it and I am prepared / have to financially run it for a few more years. At least I will know what state the engine is in, intimately. Having spoken to the Indy specialist he reckons the 2.2 diesel engine is much more reliable, if maybe not as much fun. After all the 1.9 is a highly strung Italian engine. What did I expect!

Take it easy.

Water pumps are an occasional weak point on the Alfa diesel engine. It's very unlikely that any inspection would have picked up any fault in it, it's 'just one of those things that go' Unfortunately. This was also a problem on ford cvh, vauxhall cavalier engines. Water pumps being cambelt driven are no less reliable, but cause more damge when they fail!

Agreed. Alfa specialist I used to use recommended a water pump change with the cambelt. They also recommended a cambelt change more often than Alfa did. The guy who runs the place in Royston is an Alfa genius and knows his stuff.

[h=2]What have I let myself in for?[/h]
Hi All,

First post, I just bought my 08 93ttid Aero 62k 180bhp on Saturday and love it. I came on here to check out changing the number plate bulbs and find horror story after horror story. Has anyone had a good experience with this car? From what I'm reading I should expect to replace the alternator, water pump, timing belt & egr valve by xmas. Please put my mind at ease or should I flog my new prized possession before something goes wrong?
Cheers guys.

People normally write on forums like this when they have some problems to find out what and how to do it. Not many will share good experience. Have a look on Audi or BMW(diesel) forum. Horror story after horror story. Generally diesel cars are not very reliable this days regardless of brand.

Shouldnt that be lack of reliability ? My 2007 Vecor had to have all the brakes replaced after the first year when the dealer said they cooked ? Then EGR Valve. In the second/Third year Fly wheel was replaced, gear selector gate and Horn. Year four, Alternator and Battery,Front os spring shattered, Parking sensors stopped working and Air mass sensor replaced and bonnet cable.

I've had my 04 vert for over 18 months and no major issues except run of the mill wear and tear parts and servicing. If the past 18 months are representative of next 18 months I'd definitely buy another Saab.

Had my 07 93 TiD 150 for 2 years. List of faults encountered:

Front Spring Snapped - Replaced both fronts (Under SAAB Warantee although 4 weeks out of warantee period!)
EGR Valve - Replaced
Anoying Clicking / Crackin noise from steering column which worsened with ambient temperature increse - Couldn't find fix.
Play in steering - Lower Universal Joint excessive play - Replace lower column section (Not related to above fault as it still remained)
Alternator Failed - Replaced.
Constant concern that the DPF and EGR would block up as I am a low mileage user - Take car for a good (and illegal) 100mph blast every other sunday to allow a regen to take place.
In the end I sold it and went back to a VW.

Good riddance!!!

The concern about the DPF and EGR is not something just Saab are prone to. This is a general thing throughout all makes of diesel cars. My sister has a VW golf which had to go into the dealers because her DPF blocking up due to short runs.

Just coming up to end of 3rd year of ownership on a 2004 Aero and first problem, leaking water pump. No complaint, cars nearly 9 years old and looks and runs beautifully.

Cannot vouch for what happened before i owned it but is is on mid 41k
and apart from the usual broken front spring being fixed there is simply
nothing going on with it.... it drives perfectly and is a joy! trueconfirmed.gif

Got an '07 9-3 TiD 150. Great car, but I've had my issues.

Owned it since Oct 2011, and in the first few months nothing went wrong.

Then this year it had to have:
-A ball joint replaced,
-Steering rack replaced,
-Power steering pump replaced,
-New CIM unit after the wiper stalk went mental and I had no indicators(!!),
-New engine undertray after it decided to leave my car on the M4 (very loud bang!),
-And usual things like bulbs but you know, to be expected.

One thing I've noticed since owning this (I used to have a 55 Plate 1.6 Focus) is that this car really does like chewing tyres up. I tend to only get about 4 months out of a set. Mind you, I'm not the most careful when it comes to pulling out of junctions. There's a gap, it's mine!

You dont say what mileage you do in 4 months, also what mileage the car has done.

2 previous Saabs both had new CIM's within 60k.

I've had from 10k up to 21k out of front tyres. The best has been Conti's. The worst were a very well known brand; soft, supposedly low noise and were also quite expensive. The new regs giving economy, noise, performance, info will help making a balanced choice.
You do seem to have copped a few nasties. Hope all is now well.

Maybe see you round Cardiff some time. By the way, who works on your car?

i can honestly say since 2006 i have owned 3 saab 93's, and not one single problem with them (unless you count driving through a flooded road and killing the engine) but my fault not the cars

they have all been between 1 year and 4 years old so you wouldnt expect to have any issues with such new cars would you?

My 93 Aero has been nothing but bother, both rear brake callipers seized (replaced), faulty CIM (replaced), both rear dampers (replaced), numerous vac and air leaks, faulty door module , suspected balance chain problem , SAI pump and valve failure, faulty fuel pump ,, exhaust to body heat shield fell off, heated drivers seat packed in, notchy gear change and now I think a wheel bearing is on its way out. Ive only had the thing a year.

Indeed. I'm on my second Saab 9-3. Had the first for 12 months (was 3 years old when bought) without a single issue. New one is 5 years old and seems ok so far but time will tell. In between I had a BMW 325Ci (petrol 6 Cylinder) which was a beautiful car (the SAAB can't touch it) but it cost me a fortune in 12 months: gasket seal, control arm bushes, complete set of brakes, water pump completely failed, starter motor completely failed, random electronic control lights on dash, burnt a litre of oil every 600 miles. It was a very well maintained car but boy was it expensive to keep on the road.

All cars fail. Saabs have common faults like all others.

although i have never had the ttid aero and only petrol vector sports, but my 9-3's have been 2005, 2008 and 2009 and i can honestly say i havent really had a problem in 7 years of owning saabs so, with any forum people get the wrong impression as most people only post when they have issues so you rarely hear how good a car is
