Just my luck, on the way to work this morning,I was in 3rd on a country road, I hit a bit of wet, TCS came on and it then went of, then a loud pop, and revs climbed to the red line. 3rd gear has decided to give up the ghost. I have still got 1st and 2nd but have not tried 4th and 5th yet.

Any ideas, is this my gearbox gone ??

Sounds like on of the hubs has worn out it's inner splines.

(in the pic it one of the two between the diff and the bronze synchro rings).

Each hub transfers power from on of 2 gears 1st/2nd or 3rd/4th and another for 5th.

Alternativly, the sliding steel sleeve that goes over this and connects to the selector fork may have broken, but then the you really would know that!

As you can see I had a few bits replaced on mine earlier this year...

The hubs are £72.00 + vat each, and are designed to wear quicker that the shaft the connect to which are £££.

I think you'll find that 2.3T 91-93 gearboxes are becoming rare if you were to check the classifieds... but they are available.

Now, the 93 Aero boxes are RARE!!! that's why mine was rebuilt.

To rebuild the box yourself would not be overly difficult, but my first bet would be to see if you could find a doner car with LSD

I have booked the car in to a Saab specialist in Tunbridge wells, he has only been trading for 3 months, I found him in autocar. He worked for Saab city for 6 years.

He think it is the Forks / Pins between 3rd and 4th. It is going to cost £180 to fix and to sort the Syncro out in second. He says it is approx 5 hours labour

It is going in on Friday, so I will report back.
