I'm looking at having stg3 maptun software put on my MY93 9000 aero next year. I seem to remember that while the 1993 aeros had the same bhp as the later cars they also had lower compression (something like 8.5:1) and higher torque. I can't remember how much by, or where I read it (could be Haynes) but I was wondering if this will make a difference to the results of the stage3? Does lower compression reduce the chances of detonation?

Cheers

The later models were 9.25:1 (full info here over on saabs.info) and yes in theory the lower comrpession should have less tendency to pre-ignition/detonation.

The older (up to 1993) 2.3T's also had different camshafts with more valve opening (6 degrees) I think.

Spec's here

My 1993 Aero is Maptun stg 3 and goes quite nicely and still has the ability to over fuel when needed even above 5000rpm to help prevent knock (as my last rr session showed when power was down as the same point as fueling went vwery rich).

The previous 2 RR's had been 280bhp and 283bhp. with only 17psi boost

On the road (better cooling) 20psi is seen.
