I have just been given a Saab 9-5 Est by my Company. It is on an 09 plate and therefore not the latest incarnation. I am looking to hardwire a TomTom satnav and use the aux in on the front of the stereo to transfer the sound etc. Obviously this is a right hand drive.
The stanav sits in the very right hand on the top of the dash on a holder attached to the windscreen. I use it sitting on the top of the dash just in front of the speaker grill to make sure it does not vibrate.
I have a hard wire kit, but am unsure of where I can run the cable into to pick up a power source that is ignition switched. Equally is it faesible to hide the wiring as it looks almost as if the dash has no handy areas to get behind to join the wiring?
Anyone done this already? and if so any chance you can advise where you got behind the dash without removing the whole thing.
I put in a another cigarette lighter socket, soldered onto the connectors for the one already in the dash, and hid it in the dash by the glovebox. Then pulled the ACC control and with a bit of effort managed to get the power cable to the TomTom out of the centre dash grille (there's enough flex in the grill to re-seat it, sandwiching the cable.
The wire for the traffic receiver runs above the glovebox (inside the dash) and hidden behind the A-pillar trim.
All you can see if about 2" of the power cable sticking out of the centre of the dash, ready to be plugged in.
Exactly - good point. Definitely don't cut off the cigarette lighter plug from the end of the TomTom cable as it steps the voltage down (I knew someone that blew up a Garmin doing that. Confessed to the company and they still replaced / repaired it for free - great service!)
That's why I fitted the extra cigarette lighter socket inside the dash...
Similar to Adrian, but on an '04, I took out the glovebox and the radio to thread a TMC aerial up the A-pillar. Took power from the telephone connector permanent live to 2A USB power adapter, wired to socket in the blank plug. Put TMC down USB data lines and made up special lead for satnav (power to USB charging socket, tmc to jack).
Since my phone can be charged from USB I can plug that in if I need to.
Here is what I am trying this weekend. I bought a hardwire kit designed for TomTom with a built in transformer so it takes the 12v down to 2v.
I bought the Brodit right pillar fitting and a Brodit TomTom mount with audio out.
On the drivers side of the dash (hidden by the door when closed) are 2 panels. Bottom one is the fuse enclosure. Top one is just a hole covered by a plastic plate.
Fitting the Brodit gear I am going to try and track the cables behind the dash using the plate covering the hole and running below the steering rack. I am going to solder the power to the rear of the cigarette lighter so it should all be hidden.
The audio I am going to make a small hole using a dremmel in line with the aux in socket on the right side moulding. Using a rubber grommit to tidy it up, I am going to bring the audio out from this and plug it into the aux in.
Sounds easy, I just hope it is as easy when I start doing it.
Moving to a new subject - disappointed to find I have no auto dim rear view and drivers mirror. If I try and get them from a scrap yard or God forbid buy them from Saab, any opinions on whether these can be DIY fitted or should I leave it to a specialist??
AND Finally - I am having horrendous issues with the car phone kit (TH Bury System 8 Bluetooth to a Blackberry 8100). I can hear perfectly, all callers just get their own voices echo!! - Installers fitted a new kit, same issue. The installer questioned whether the microphone in the little ceiling dash where the cabin lights are, is live - if so then the echo could be caused by that. He wanted to just cut the cable to it!!!!!, I told him to bu**er off, idiot. So does anyone know if these microphone are preset to ON??? and if so anyone know how I tie it into my car kit???
Auto dim mirror can be retro fitted. If there is no plug there you just need to wire into live and earth. That will be enough to get the auto-dim to work.
The Saab wiring on a factory fit has connections to the computer system to do things that are not necessary - mainly automatically undimming the mirror when you select reverse.
The Saab microphone has three pins and two wires. Altering the connections at the mic will change the impedance, which may be your only problem. But there may be a wiring issue in the 18 pin connector for handsfree. I assume the installer used the 18 pin connector rather than a generic ISO lead set? Most people now avoid the mic problems by using the mic supplied with the kit and placing it in front of the driver.
Have you seen the pics of my Parrot install? Connections are similar for any kit. Link here
