  1. Classic Saab 9-5 (1997 - 2009)
Synthetic and JWS 3309 certified. Only 6 pounds at opie oils made by Gulf. Yellow in colour as required by VW and ZF boxes so good for many different cars. I changed the old Dexron 3 out today as I read on here it would be no good for the Aisin Warner autobox and true, after only 20k miles it...

I wanted to change the oil on a 95 Aero and bought Shell HX7 10w-40 advertised as Synthetic Technology motor oil and on investigation found it to be Semi-Synthetic which is not suitable, so just wanted everyone to be careful when purchasing oil as this can cause major problems if you get it wrong

Hi all, Fairly new to the Saab scene and this forum, so this may well have been covered somewhere before? Is my 2002 '93 Petrol Turbo Convertible semi or fully synthetic in the oil dept? And (just supposing) that I happened to have mixed the two (of course that will never happen...) would...

Has anybody here used T-sco or A-da fully synthetic oil in their car ?

In my local Tesco Extra, noticed they now sell 5-30 and 5-40 fully synth oil for £20 per 4 litres. Seems a good price. It's not Mobil 1 but no reason why it shouldn't be Ok if funds are tight.

Hi My 2003 9-5 2.3t Arc was serviced @ 42000 miles by a main Saab dealer (for the previous owner). Is Fully synthetic oil specified by Saab for their dealer services? If so I could therefore assume that it would have had fully synthetic oil? Also with its previous services by main dealers? It...

I have heard about the sludge in the sump problem with 9-5's and all the breather mod's that saab have tried.... Can we not use Diesel oil that is the same viscosity as normal?? As these have cleaning agents in the oil and are meant for diesel engines that sludge up..... Just wanted to hear...
  8. Classic Saab 9-5 (1997 - 2009)
Just wanted to throw this up for comment as Im a bit confused and worried! Recently I popped in to a well regard Indy with my MY2002 Aero for a reccy and whilst I was there decided to have fresh oil and a filter. Whilst paying the bill I asked what type of synthetic had you put in to be told -...

how do we all feel about putting Semi Synth in a LPT. Personally, I'm getting fully synthetic oil in mine but Cromwell Saab told me that all mine needed was Semi. 2000, 2.0 LPT, Red DI... Should Fully Syntheitc oil be used in all derivatives of the Saab petrol engines?

Hi All, I'm a proud new member of this forum have (probably stupidly) agreed to look after my missus cabrio in a very complicated domestic money saving deal. So now I want to give it a basic service: oil change, filters. brakes etc. So my big question is what's the generally accepted commonly...
  13. Saab 9000 (1984 - 1998)
Hi all, Noticed that elkparts are selling the GM longlife oil and they are saying that SAAB is also recommending it - my question is, would this be okay in my un-modified 97 2.3T Anniversary with 140k on the clock ? Thanks for any advice Gary....

I'm cynical of the majority of anything that's released as being "better." The new Mars Bar was skanky. CIF as the new GIF. That sort of thing. But a colleague was ranting on about how he could dip his finger into BP Ultimate Diesel and it didn't smell of diesel, oh and the car was quieter...

I've read on past threads that fully synthetic oil is now recommended for turbo engines. Also people seem to recommend Mobil 1 oil. But my question is which oil grade is recommended? Elk parts sell Saab 0W/30 full synthetic, but from what I can tell Mobil have discontinued this grade and now...

Went into our local Tesco Extra and saw "new" Tesco own brand fully synth - 5w-40, £7.50 for 2 litres. They do a semi synth as well for a bit less. I'm not sure I would risk it in an engine under warranty (but no reason why it should be any worse than anything else) but it might be of interest...

On the 'blurb' about synthetic oils, the manufactures claim that using these oils will improve fuel consumption..........to what degree would this be ? 1%, 5% ???? Curious if anyone has some figures to put on it. Thanks in advance Mitch

if anybody needs their oil changing & cant be bothered to do it themselves, i have just had it done a ATS. fully synthetic shell helix ultra 5w-40 grade, £34-99. i thought this was reasonable as it almost costs this amount to buy the oil on its own. 1998 2.3 lpt

I've been reading a lot about engine failures due to sludge build up. This is scarey stuff! I recently switched to synthetic Mobile 1 oil. I'd like to hear from members what they think of synthetics and what can be done to avoid this dreadfull sludge build up. Thanks to all. Kent

Fully synthetic oil - £14.99 for 5 litres Merry Christmas and a happy SAAB New Year to you all. Just thought that I'd mention that the favourite high street retailer, 'halfords' have a sale on, and their own Fully Synthetic 5W/40 motor oil is half price at £14.99 for 5 litres. I've used it...
