Just an fyi post really folks in case someone is interested. When I was renewing the timing chain and guides ( engine in car) bit of a job but thats another story, I decided that I would remove the balance system due to a fear of failure. I left the shafts in bored and tapped a grub screw just...

I think I've got the usual timing chain issue - a slight rattle when cold for about 2 mins, then quiet. 84k miles on the std oil change schedule. Can anyone advise whether that is likely to be just a stretched timing chain and could be fixed by winding on a new one? Has anyone done that? I'll...

Hi, folks. 9000 1997 2.3 lpt. I am running out of the time that I can use a borrowed garage. ( Not an engineering garage ). My prob: an inlet balance shaft gear wheel that I can't separate from the balance shaft. The wheel is knackered, so I can't just leave it in. My questions: how easy is it...

Hi, i recently had some exhaust studs replaced on my 2002 9-3 Aero and to do the work, as some had snapped, they had to take the head off and do it on the bench. This was all carried out fine and when i picked the car up (engine slightly warm) all seemed fine. However, the next day when i...

On Ebay recently there is a Saab Turbo engine for sale with balance shafts removed. I was curious about this and emailed the seller for an explanation. He explained that it was a spare engine prepared for his mk2 escort racing car. The balance shafts in his opinion slow the response of the...

It’s only done 34k miles but it has developed a rough engine noise when stationary and also gives a slight vibration, however when moving the car is fine and no loss of power. I’ve been told by a Saab specialist that it an issue with the balance chain tensioners and...

Hi All, In my original post back in May: http://www.saabscene.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=31644928 I had just bought a nice looking '95 NG900S naturally asp. with a knock and a strange piece of something floating around in the sump. Hi All Can anybody recall a similar experience ? When travelling on my local motorway for a short distance (5miles) i suddenly felt the car vibrating as if i had a wheel balance problem. A judder which on reflection felt more as if in my laymans terms was as if the drive power and the...

  19. Saab 9000 (1984 - 1998)
OK - The old Aero has now done 155k miles on the original chain. I 'think' I can hear a bit of chain rattle now. Sounds a little like someone shaking a can of gravel at tickover when cold and goes away. It's on that side of the engine too. Baby due soon so don't want any chain snapping or...

On a GM900, Can the balance shaft chain and the tensioner/sprockets be removed with the engine in the car? I intend to disable the balance shafts by removing the chain and blocking the oil feeds to the tensioner with a blanking plate behind the tensioner.....anyone tried this with success?
