Thread: Bit of a mess...

    Bit of a mess...

While having a mini-meet with MarkE and MarkA at Abbott racing today (I think we all had a nice day, largely thanks to the guys at Abbott), I was able to have a look at what's left of my gearbox that expired at Castle Combe. The problem seems to be that something went in the final drive and the teeth are badly stripped. The debris also got wedged in other things and cracked the clutch side of the casing.

They say they have never seen anything as severe as this before, and that they can only think that a tooth may have broken (perhaps weakened by a previous failure a few weeks ago) and become lodged between the gears, causing further damage. I think I must have been doing 100+ in 4th gear at the time.

Anyway, a couple of pics (ouch!):

Yep, that's worse than my reverse gear was!

I think the term is terminal

I take it thats an output shaft, differential gear, LAD in the centre and a little plastic drive gear for the speedo.

    As an impartial bystander...

I can only say from what I saw that Abbott are adopting a perfectly reasonable and professional approach to the problem. It's very complicated and involved because of the history and it would be inappropriate for any of us to speculate as to the rights & wrongs of the situation without being in possession of the full facts. I know pretty much all of them but wouldn't go there... 'nuff said

PS forgot to say that the missing pic is the one of the gearbox housing covered in gear shreds and also having a nice crack...

Well, I could say that perhaps they ought to have spotted it, so it cuts both ways. The comment actually came from one of their technicians, not Giles or Ed.

They haven't mentioned the cost yet, so I'll speak to them before I pick it up. Their attitude wasn't cagey and we had a really relaxed day with them.

Maybe, but mine only shows the shreds, and not the crack or gouging, so I thought I'd leave it out. Perhaps MarkA got a better pic of the housing.

Have I missed something? Whats being done Bill, I take it that the current gearbox is beyond economical repair, is it going to be a new box or rebuild a secondhand unit?

    Re: Bit of a mess...

BillJ, you were doing 100+ mph in fourth gear when 'it' gave way. Then what happened? Did the car screech to a halt or lose control or just freewheel or what? looks like it could have been well dangerous

The rest of the gears and the LSD seem in good condition, so I think that as long as they're careful to strip everything down and clean it, it should only require new final drive gears (3.8:1 instead of 4.05:1, which I found a little bit too low) and half a new (secondhand) housing.
