Question 2008 93 1.8T Linear Auto Petrol heavier steering than Diesel

Im finding the steering heavy on my Saab 93 i've bought, and due to health reasons heavier steering is an issue .

I've taken it to a Saab specialist and they said the steering is fine nothing wrong with it and the reason i'm finding the steering heavier than i expected is mine is a petrol and its mechanically driven off the engine.

The reason they said i found the diesels lighter is the steering is electrically driven and it's on the rack. However ive driven a number of Saab 95's and they also told me both the petrol and diesel with them are mechanically driven off the engine like mine but I find the steering much lighter on the 95's, but I suppose the 95 just might have a lighter steering set up than the 93 anyway?

Im just deciding at the moment is there anything i can do to try and lighten the steering and live with it or trade it in, annoying thing is i was looking for a 95 but couldnt find one in decent condition and i needed a car

Its true the diesels have EHPS but I am suprised there would be a noticeable difference versus mechanical pump.
We have 5 Saabs in the family a mix of 9-3's and 9-5's and frankly I have never noticed any difference steering wise.
Might be an idea for you to try a 9-3 especially an auto as the tax saving would be high too.

The steering is soft in petrol cars as well. never driven diesel as they did not sell here in Mexico City, but all cars that I have serviced which have a heavy steering is due to improper maintenance of the steering and not changing the fluid at least every 2 yrs. the problem maybe your steering rack going out, usually when this happens first starts getting heavy and squeals when turning left, then all directions. Make sure the fluid level is correct all times, this measure is neglected by many people and end up loosing the whole rack ($$$$). Hope this is helpful for you,,regards.
