    Gas Leak

Could not figure out why I was using/losing gas. Then recently I could smell gas but never could see anything, and when the car was not running there was no smell or visible leak. Today I let it run in the driveway and saw gas leaking from the rear/tank area. I guess it only leaks while under pressure. Any thoughts? Looks like it's off to the shop Monday, this may be above my pay grade to fix! Maybe a seal or the line?? Thanks Tom.

    Re: Gas Leak

    tomringo,

Could be the clips which hold the filler tube to the tank and the venting pipe. These have a habit of rusting through and falling off. The tanks themselves are pretty robust and require a serious impact to burst. The fuel pipes to and from the engine run from the top of the tank so are unlikely to drip out.

The other place could be at the fuel filter. This lives just in front of the right side ( looking forwards ) rear wheel. The filter has been known to rust through.

Best I could see looking under, the leak begins after the engine runs for about 45 sec. leak is coming down from top at the back just ahead of the axle. Could be the evaporator area I think. Maybe?

    Re: Gas Leak

    Tom,

Bit of a clue here. When you said 'gas', as an American, I assumed you meant gasoline, what we call petrol. I now think you do mean gas, as in Liquified Petroleum Gas, LPG. If this is the case then it's a shop job since it will need specialised kit to repair. Might just be a loose connection though.

Yes, sorry, sometime forget who reads this and should be more clear. Yes the leak is gasoline, petrol. Going to the shop tomorrow or Tuesday pending schedules. Thanks again, Tom.

    Re: Gas Leak

Yes I was going to update all, but have been busy. The leak was a result of the fuel line clip which holds the line in the tank. Clip broke and allowed the line to come out of the tank. This only showed a leak while the engine ran. Tank had to be dropped and a new updated hold down clip installed. The heat shield bolts were rusted away and the shop fixed the shield with new bolts and washes to hold it firmly. I also had them change the fuel filter as it was the original as far as I knew (99k miles) All is well now. If yours is leaking you should be able to see some on the ground/floor. Put some cardboard under and see if you can locate the drip area. Good luck. Thanks, Tom
