    9-3 audio install help

    Hello everyone,

I need some advice for my sound system.

I'm a new joiner to the saabscene, need some help with my 2003 Saab 9-3 1.8t vector.

The system that I believe to have(did some research) is: ICM1, no CD slot for some reason,
and the 4D premium 150 sound system.

I noticed that my front door speakers aren't working, also my turn indicator sound works most of the time but sometimes it doesn't. I understand that this is because AMP1 under the driver seat is most likely
    corroded.

What I did was add 2 6x9" bass speakers to the parcel shelf, and then tapped off the signal from the 2 existing speakers. So now I have 4 speakers working in the parcel shelf.

My problem: the sound system doesn't seem to have very good mid/low level sound.
    - is this something that's related to AMP1 being broke?
    - will I gain some mind and low level by replacing AMP1?

Also, is it reasonably easy to add a prestige 300 amp in the rear left?
-Would this enable me to use a mid/base only channel to drive the 6x9"s?
-Are the premium 150 and prestige 300 wiring looms similar (and plug and play compatible)?

I am asking all these questions because I don't think replacing the stock radio with something big and
fancy looks very good, and would prefer to add a little power to the stock system.

Sorry for the many questions, hopefully you guys(and girls!) are able to help me a bit.
Hints and tips are very welcome!

    Thanks in advance!

I've started a new thread on you issue, the thread you posted in was 5yrs old..none of the icms have a cd slot..the cd player is located underneath the acc/mcc panel..

unhook a set of the speakers on the rear deck you have changed the ohmage of the speakers by just tapping another set onto the rear channels, depending on how you tapped the wires, ehu is either seeing 2 ohms or 8 ohms..

    Hi Jon,

First of all thanks for the new thread. There really isn't a CD player op the dash,
I will try to attach a picture.

Secondly, the wire that I soldered on the old and new speakers are parallel. And as you said, the new total resistance of the system will now be 1/Rv = ∑ (1/Rn) = 1/ R1 + 1 / R2 gives in my situation:
    1/Rv= 1/4Ω + 1/4Ω= 0,5 Rv=1/0,5= 2Ω
I will attach a picture of this as well.

    IMG_4557.jpgIMG_4556.jpg

Perhaps this is the wrong way to do it, and I assume that you can help me out here. The speakers work fine however.

For my questions of the first post,
-the mid level and overall sound isn't great, this is also related to my AMP1 problem correct? I should see an improvement on replacing that with an original Saab part?

-is it easier to add the amp of the prestige 300 in the left rear and then wire the woofers to this?

-are the premium 150 systems able to communicate with an prestige 300 amp in the back if I try this route? I wonder if the systems are "plug and play" compatible.

    Edit2:
Did some research about amplifiers and resistance, what I did by lowering the resistance of the speakers is dangerous if the AMP is not rated for the lower resistance.

WARNING! For people considering to add some 6x9'' on the rear, wiring them in the way that I did on the picture above MAY RESULT IN DAMAGEING YOUR AMP.

Also, I will be changing this because this is not a proper base channel I discovered.

Question, what is the Ohm(Ω) rating of a Saab pioneer speaker? I have tried to research this but I can't seem to find any information on Saab amplifiers.

    Re: 9-3 audio install help

in wiring them in the way you have you've gone from 4 ohms a channel to 2 ohms which as you say is not good for the amp as the lower ohms will make it run hotter which over time will blow components within the ehu..you can wire to the 6x9s and not use the 4" speakers but the rms of the ehu is pityful and won't be able to drive them properly..
Not all countries had amp1 as standard fitment, you need to look under the front left seat to see if there is one there...there were 3 speaker configs in the 9-3 4,7 and 13 speakers..I've never seen a 9-3 without a cd player in all the years I've been on saab forums..

Any amps added to the system need to be added with tech2 as they are linked using the MoST fibre optic system..

    Re: 9-3 audio install help

So, I have taken a another good look underneath my driver seat.

    Bad news and great dissapointment..

What I thought was an amp1 with the audio cable going in, was just a hump in the floor with the cable stuck under the carpet. There never was an amp1 there... #cry

Brings me to the conclusion, I don't have the premium 150 system, and no door speakers. ;(

Still am looking to improve this s*tty sound system, Is there a nice android system that fits in the 2003 ICM1 slot?

My goal now is, to have some proper sound, feel the base in my lower back like in my old 2002 9-5 Harman Khardon system.

    @Aerojon,

I saw this thread from 09 where you helped someone with a full upgrade to a prestige 300 system from scratch:
    https://www.saabscene.com/forum/threa...rade-Amp1-Amp2

Took a look at all the parts required, and looks like the parts required for this:

    for 150:

    12806042
    32000572
    32025843

    and for 300:

    12787154
    32000556
    are no longer available anywhere...

Am trying to find the individual part numbers of everything included in these "upgrade kits"do you know where I can find such lists?

    Alternatives?

    Re: 9-3 audio install help

    Hi everyone,

Discovered that I have the premium 70 system, yes it was quite a disappointment.

Need advice, looking for an upgrade either by adding AMP1 under the seat or a Non-Saab amp and drive the existing system plus adding door and parcel shelf two 6x9" s any links?

Quick question about the Saab stereo system: Do all amplifiers of Saab get the audio signal via the optical channel? Even the premium 70? Or via a different channel?

The reason for this question, is that I found the cable for AMP1 under the driver seat. But there wasn't a optical cable in the plug.(I don't have AMP1, just a cable sticking out the floor)

At this point I would like to add either an original Saab AMP1 under my seat, or add a amp the drive all the sound system from the back.
What would be more cost effective? What can I expect from the sound system for either option?

Could someone please inform me if this has been already discussed in a different thread? I really need more info.

I don't know how far the op got but he kept updating the thread but now nothing from him
I know I've seen a few pre facelift 9-3 with aftermarket head units plumbed in where the CD player sits . And just run all new cables for speakers and power , and leave the stock HU in place as it seems like a big and prolly can't be done sort of faff .
That's prolly your only way to get a decent sound .
But how much it costs to do and there's the time involved is endless

    Thanks Lizzard-t!

Very useful bit of info, sad he didn't keep updating his progress.. It could have been a complete walk-thru for me

I understand there is no aftermarket replacement for the ICM1 right? this controls some car functions as well if I'm correct, Will however look for a way to amplify.

Is it possible to put an aftermarket amp under the driver seat, using the wires of the cable where normally AMP1 plugs in? in that case, where do I pick up my signal input for that amp? from ICM?

(NOTE, I found the cable for AMP1 under my seat, no Fiber optic cable in that connector???)

Sorry if some of these questions are completely noobish, but I'm trying to get my head around Saab logic and the Optical system.

Thanks for reading, any help is much appreciated!

    Re: 9-3 audio install help

Sry for the lack of response, been a bit busy not really had the time to spend to respond fully until now..

what you see in the dash the the control panel, the actual ehu is located behind the acc/mcc panel, there is no a/m amp to replace amp1 due to the fibre optic loop that the audio uses..

if it was me having to upgrade the 4sp system, start with replacing the dash and rear speakers(there not the best)..install a 2 channel amp(feed taken from the dash speakers) at the front to run the door speakers then the same for the rears(2ch amp feed from the rears)..the only thing you won't get is mid and sub bass as that is supplied by amp1(door and centre dash) and amp2(rear 6x9s)..

    Hi John,

Thanks for the info about the mid/sub base levels, as this I my biggest issue.
I called a Saab garage in my area and they have an AMP1 spare, I think I will ask them to install the AMP1 under the seat. And then take the door channel and run this to an 2 channel amp to power my 6x9"s.

Would you guys agree this being the best solution?

    Re: 9-3 audio install help

No optic cables in the connector = no input signal from the ehu = no amp1 can be fitted..

I think you're going to struggle to find the cables direct from saab parts.

    Re: 9-3 audio install help

3 options left the way I see it at this moment, maybe someone can give me their opinion on the best solution.

    1. I found this adapter for low and mid levels: http://skyddet.nu/produkt.php?id=4302&meny_id=100 and put a simple 2 channel amp under the driver seat to power the door and shelf speakers. I think this is the cheapest option.

    2. Use the above adapter, AND cut+ tap in to the remaining audio cables behind ICM1 and wire these to a multi channel amp and back for better sounding audio.

    3. Maybe this is the most beautiful solution, If it works?!! Maybe somebody knows:
Get a car amp that has a optical in, then connect a optical cable from the back of ICM1 to the amp and drive all speakers from this.

Does anyone know what kind of communications are on the Saab O-bus?
If this is only audio, is there a special coding or "digital language" I need to be aware of?

    Thanks for reading and helping!

When I make up my mind on the way to approach this I will make a walk through including pictures.

HELP! I cannot find anywhere to ask a question, but this thread might be able to direct me. My SAAB radio died and I replaced it with a Pioneer unit, installed by a specialist. All of the audio warning sounds do not now work. Is there any fix to this?
