    CV Boot "Early" Failure

    Hi There,

I've just spotted the fact that the CV boots on my 1997 9000 CSE are showing signs of perishing. I wouldn't mind but they are less than 3 years old and they were supposed to be OEM quality.

They are made by Spidan (GKN).

Does anybody else have similar experiences or recommendations for boots that might last a bit longer (without doubling the value of the car)?

    Thanks
    Terry

    Hi Paul,

I've searched for any info on this without success - can you tell me what the earlier thread/question was called?

    Cheers
    Ter

I remember back in the 90s had the same problem with non oe boots, they were nearly an inch or so smaller in height than oe(Vauxhall)..not so good when being on full lock, the boots were stretched to the max,no such issues with oe..

    hughestt,

Sorry, I thought I had answered this question but obviously it didn't get posted properly.

My thoughts were : If the CV joint boots are perishing then either they are rubbish boots or they have become contaminated with something.

As far as replacements are concerned, you can try somewhere like BillJ or the like, use split boots, or stretch boots.

Split boots can be OK if they are carefully fitted, you need to ensure that you don't get any grease on the glueing surface. I leave the old one on while I glue the new one in place, then cut the old one off. If you do the job methodically, they can last for a few years.

Stretch boots need a cone to slide it over. I've never had any success with them and always ended up taking the drive shaft out of the CV joint. Not really a big problem since you need to take the CV joint out of the hub anyway and they just tap off.

    Paul @ Kippen.

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for your guidance as always.

That's the nub of what I'm trying to discover, if the ones that I fitted, made by GKN, were not good enough, are genuine SAAB parts the only alternative?

Changing them is not a trivial task and I don't want to be doing this every couple of years.

    Cheers

    hughestt,

I'm not at home just now so can't find out what make I usually use. Can't say I have ever had problems with boots perishing.
