9000 Anniversary Auto late changing

Hi Folks,

I'm hoping for some ideas on a problem with my auto box which I'd like to be able to nip in the bud.

Last weekend I took the Luxury Saab out for a quick test drive following my servicing the engine and changing the brake fluid but was slightly horrified to find the box not changing 1st to 2nd until a lot later than usual. It kind of settled down once it warmed up a bit but I decided to bring the ATF and filter change forward (not due till next year). This seemed to solve it for a few days but it's started doing it again when cold.

So this is the 1997 CSE 2.0 LPT Auto that's just turned 120K. I've been changing the ATF and filter regularly and when I changed it this time, the fluid did not look too bad.

About 2 years ago, I did discover that the ATF had been leaking into the coolant through the radiator but I've seen no evidence of coolant in the ATF.

I notice that some people advocate a more thorough ATF change than I've been doing. Following Mr Haynes' guidance, I've just been draining the ATF sump the once and refillng but I see the alternative method is to drain refill it three times.

I'm thinking that it might be worth trying another two ATF changes, or that these symptoms might be that the governor seals are due for renewal.

What does the panel think?

Thanks
Terry

Does the box behave normally apart from the late shifting? No slipping, smooth shifts, no whining or grinding noises?
Oil and filter free of debris before you changed it?
Does placing the selector in 3-2-1 work as it should?
Is the kickdown cable moving freely? You can check this at the throttle body.

If you can say yes to all four questions you can be almost 100% sure it's governor seals. Cheap and easy fix anyway so always worth a try. There are quite a few howto's on the web.

autobox specialists are usually the best (and only) source for such parts yes. Make a few calls to specialists near you, shouldn't be a major issue.

You need the gasket from the side cover and 2 new rubber o-rings for the governor, the 3rd ring is a metal one and does not need replacement. A new bolt for the sprocket of the pignon shaft is recommended but not really necessary.

Hi 900009,
Just to report back. Yes indeed one of the seals was split and changing them has solved the problem.

Thanks for the guidance.

Several of the torx bolts holding the rear box casing rounded off when removing them so I replaced them all with 35mm M6 hex bolts from Screwfix which were available and very reasonably priced.

Cheers
Terry
