My wife's car failed MOT on CO emissions

    Dear all,

I am looking for some advice here for my other half's VW Polo 1.4 16v. Her car failed on CO emissions, I have read on some other forums that it might not necessarily be the case of anything defective, as HC and Lambda values were well within the limits. I assume that the car has some deposits cause its only used for very short distances, the values are:

Test done with 80 degrees engine temperature (do they mean coolant temp?)

    Engine speed 2700rpm

    CO: 0.56% FAIL (0.3% pass)
HC: 29 ppm PASS (200 ppm limit)
    Lambda: 0.98 PASS (from 0.970 to 1.030)

    Second test wasn't much better

The garage already wanted to install a new cat, but I guess that giving it a good blast down the motorway it would heat up the cat properly and make a big difference. Given the other values are well within limits and especially the HC so low, I think that its not the lambda sensor.

Can you confirm that if anything is wrong, its the cat?

    Thank you!

Take it to a more lenient mot place that will put another car on and get shot and buy something else rather than having to go through this trouble every year.

Italian tune up! check fluids and take it for 30 MILE BLAST AT HIGH REVS TO CLEAR IT OUT!

Yes a good thrash just before taking it for mot and make sure engine temp is up 80deg seems a little low so could be running slightly rich
Where did you take it? If we fail mot because of emissions we suggest a good run before bringing it back and in most cases the car then passes
Its a little harder these days to be leeniant as the probe up the hole readings are recorded

I know some garages round here will stick another car on for 5-10 quid.

Re: My wife's car failed MOT on CO emissions

I wouldn't do it on an old/high millage engine, the carbon deposits build up a sealing face and removing it on a worn engine could result in oil use, loss of combustion etc

As for the Ed China he is a minor TV celebrity. If you pay him enough money, he will say whatever you want him to say.

A company round by me does it, posts loads of car's on his page and seems to have happy customers from it on both old and fairly new cars, just a suggestion!

Re: My wife's car failed MOT on CO emissions

they not long introduced a new service for egr, im and turbo clean ..........face value one would say yes given the work involved to remove the im but its to new imo and what if it just loosens the gunk in the im and the possibility of it then been sucked into the engine
this one will not do fuel injectors etc

just to new imo and there are alot of mixed reviews about

Re: My wife's car failed MOT on CO emissions

Ok, given the answers I understand that the car is ok and that it just needs to be warmer - just as I thought. No need to test another car to pass. If the car had been in too bad a condition to pass or be fixed, I would have scrapped it.

    Thanks!
