Thread: 9-5 Electrical Riddle, Please help solve...

Unhappy 9-5 Electrical Riddle, Please help solve...

My 2001 9-5 Aero's developed a fault that prevents it starting, or doing anything at all.

Symptoms are below, but the thing is, the Local Saab garage visited with the Tech2, and said that it "wouldn't communicate".

So, they swapped out the DICE, and still the same, no communication. they first thought that it was the TWICE, so the swapped that out too, and still no communication.

I know you guys have a vast knowledge of past issues, and i wonder if you have heard of any reason that the following symptoms occur:

NO reaction to the key remotes AT ALL (2 sets of new batteries...)
No flashes or anything from the red dash led.
    no interior light
    no central locking
    Radio is locked
no Bongs when ignition turns to on, but does come up "checking" etc.
no surge from the fuel pump
engine turns over, but no actual start.
AirCon didn't work on the last journey.
DICE wont communicate at all with Tech2

I thought hat the DICE would basically work whatever, unless it was broke. (spare DICE known to be OK)

    Please help, if you can.

    Thanks
    Ian

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes see if that will clear anything ?

have you checked the obd socket.............none of the pins have pushed back or broken wire preventing contact to the tech 2

Re: 9-5 Electrical Riddle, Please help solve...

Hi Ian..........yes ive come across things like this before although not on Saab it can be a multitude of things tbh like a faulty relay, fuse, ecu including wiring to and from. were your keys programed to the new dice unit etc

the problem is trying to diagnose a complex issue like this over the internet, its time like this you wish someone has had the exact same problem which would narrow things down a bit

long shot here although not specific to saab its worth checking just to see if you can get it to start, as to your problem don't think its the issue but well worth a check

    https://www.saabscene.com/forum/threa...ILL-NOT-START)

have you checked your fuses relays, not sure if below is exact to your car although is from a my01 9-5 and at least will give you an idea of what to check..............

    is your car t5 0r t7 ?

    Thanks Kez,

There's lots to check there, so i'll probably tackle it at the weekend.

    T7 - Black ignition module.

Nothing got reprogrammed as the tech2 wouldn't connect, so the car's as is with the fault.

I'm thinking loose wire, corroded connection etc. i agree that it could be anything. i think not connecting to DICE is a smoking gun though, so will start there -presumably if there were faults deeper than DICE, it would at least connect, and presumably state them as being shady(?) - do you know of a pin-out diagram for the DICE/TWICE connectors so i can check they're getting power/have earth?

Sadly, i think that the local SAAB people saw this for what it is - hours of slow investigation and a massive paycheck.

    Whatever happens, i'll post back.

    All suggestions still welcome.

    Thanks
    Ian

Re: 9-5 Electrical Riddle, Please help solve...

one thing I would do first if you have them is swop back to the original dice/twice units as at least these were known good the last time the car worked, by replacing them has not rectified the issue so chancies are this is not the problem, plus your new ones aren't programed to the car anyway
sure on the T7 the ecu receives a wake up from the ign then asks the twice for permission to start so to speak

Re: 9-5 Electrical Riddle, Please help solve...

    Hi, Ok,

I missed my weekend window for doing this due to some unforeseen circs, not to mention a heavy Drizzle in the air.

I have looked down the Pinout(s), and it looks like I don't need a posh multimeter for this unless...

-for the Voltages with a short duration, do I "need" an Automotive Multimeter? or can I just call it on a "Blip" up to somewhere near. - i'm not going to be buying the Fluke 88 any time soon.

Thanks so much so far, as always i'll update this as i progress.

    Regards,
    Ian

a noid light would be useful and can be purchased individually or part of a kit very cheaply prob on ebay , basically designed for testing injector pulse, but very useful for anything that has a pulse, as you might struggle to see any with a normal multimeter
