    2006 Saab 93 Aero Convertible 2.8V6 turbo

So I have had my vert a whole week and I am loving it. Had a Mazda RX8 beforehand- so thought I would post a quick review of the second saab I have owned (the first being a 02 vert airflow 2.0t lpt).

    engine:
The 2.8V6 turbo is a great engine. It has lots of torque very low down the rev range. Has a really muffled V6 roar under moderate to hard acceleration- love it. It is more characterful than the banzai rotary unit in the rx8, which really needed to be thrashed to make good progress. Married with the 6 speed auto box, the Saab makes for effortless cruising- but when you kick down.... it really goes!!! My 6 year old swears it feels faster than the old rx8. Will be adding a maptun panel air filter from Neo Brothers at the weekend - so will see if this adds anything in terms of noise and performance.

    Transmission
The 6 speed autobox with the optional paddle shifters isn't the smoothest or most refined automatic out there and I find it slightly aggressive in nature- holding onto the gears a tad longer than expected... which I like. The paddle shifters are not Ferarri quick that's for sure, with the changes being super lazy at best. But they are fun to use when the mood takes you.

    Styling:
Love it- the aero sits low to the ground- 17 inch wheel and twin exhausts setting it off nicely...always liked this shape.

    Interior
Saab seats are the best and I love the aerospace inspired dash. My stereo is the prestige 300 and it rocks........it is miles better than the bose system in the RX8 which just didn't seem to sound right and lacked bass.

    Conclusion
So far I am very pleased with the Saab. I was really keen on tracking down a 2.8V6 Turbo which can be rare in the UK, and I was lucky when two verts came up for sale within 10 miles of me. Its a very comfortable cruiser that just wants to be driven and driven. As previously mentioned, a maptun panel air filter is going in at the weekend and I will be changing the sidelight bulbs to whiter ones to compliment the xenons. That will be it in terms of mods. Looking forward to enjoying the Aero this year, hopefully getting the roof down if it ever stops raining!!!!

my last car was also a 57 plate rx8,the saab is a much more comfortable ride and the fuel consumption, and the tax....... i could go on,but at least with the saab i dont have to worry about the engine going boom every 5 mins, but alas i do miss the 9000 rev limit

Here is a quick update - first thing has gone wrong booo hooo- brake pedal seems really stiff on start up from cold. Really have to press it down to stop reversing out of the garage into the rose bush. Seems fine once it gets going ...... but its not very confidence inspiring. Dropped the car off at the local saab specialists- they can't locate any vaccum leaks anywhere but think that the front pads and discs look shot. They have the car, so will see if they can replicate the problem tomorrow morning. Need the car back on the road as it top down Sunday at Goodwood this weekend and the 2.8 needs to be there!!!!!!

I also have an 06 Aero convertible, and my brake pedal acts the same way at startup while backing out of the garage. I'd appreciate hearing what your shop says. I haven't looked into mine yet - I bought mine in late March. But I love it!

problem sorted ....... it seems that the 2.8v6 has a known weakness in its electric vacuum pump which assists braking on start up ....here is a link to an NHTSA report showing a known problem with this part and water ingress:

My saab specialist removed and examined mine and found water ingress had caused it to seize so no vacuum assistance on start up.... not good. Here are the pictures of the old pump:

New pump fitted....... problem gone...... spread the word 93 v6 owners
