    I think that ESP was introduced by Bosch in the mid nineties, probably on Mercedes cars.

    Thanks for both replies.
    I won't have my mechanic look at the car before June 2nd but he suspects a faulty temp sensor on the compressor.
    Crossing my fingers, I DON'T want to buy a new compressor.
