smell of fuel

when i have the window open i can smell petrol is this normal or is there a breather blocked.

its a 92 9000se

its worth checking the fuel pump sealing ring under the floor panel in hatch area, remove wooden floor on hatchbacks to find a metal hatch under this sits the fuel pump held in by a locking ring a big seal .

tried the fuel pump but its dry as a bone any other sugestions

check the short rubber hose running from the back of the gas cap to the filler neck on the tank, I recently had this problem and looked to find that the four inch long hose had dry rotted and was leaking fumes into the car.
