Brake Discs
I am going to need new discs and pads all round on my '96 cse2.3t. A few questions.......
1, Should I replace with standard discs and pads
2, Should I upgrade
3, How much should the standard brake disks and pads be?
Cheers Jon

Re: Brake Discs
Jon,
It depends on what you wish to do with the car.
The standard brakes work fairly well and can be changed for under £200.
You can go for a good standard size disk (grey iron) and uprated pads for under £250 e.g ferrodo DS2500, Mintex 1144's etc
Or you can go for bigger disks at more money (others can tell you about those) that may need larger alloys.
Why not search the 9000 and stte archives for brake and disk topic from this year

Re: Brake Discs
I'm also on the lookout for new discs and pads and looking through the archives its seems for me a good option would be the Brembo discs and Mintex 1144 pads.
My local motorsport shop wants £220 just for the front discs/pads so I'm looking for alternative suppliers. I know Trent do the discs but does anyone know of a more keenly priced source for them (mail order or local to east Herts)?
Also does anyone have the part no's for the Mintex pads, a mate of mine could only find the front pads for the Saab?
Cheers

Re: Brake Discs
Welcome to Saabscene, Matt A.
Someone did post the details of a supplier for the Brembo discs, but I can't remember who. The part numbers are:
Front discs (pair): Brembo 09.5221.10
Rear discs (pair): Brembo 08.5037.10
I got a set of front 1144s from Howe Engineering in Buntingford, who can't be very far from you. I got the rears from Euro Car Parts, although they always seem to be out of stock these days.
I can ask Howe tomorrow about price and availability, since I'll be there to pick up my car. Perhaps they can help with the discs too.
Abbott Racing also carry the front and rear 1144 pads, but in common with many parts they buy off the shelf, they are rather more expensive than elsewhere.

Re: Brake Discs
Thanks BillJ, that would be helpful. You're right, Howe aren't too far away, just up the A10 from me, and I have used them for servicing before now, don't know why I didn't think of them
Cheers

Re: Brake Discs
Mintex 1144 pads were £123 included delivery, VAT etc from Rally Design, and they were in stock. See this post.

Re: Brake Discs
I suppose if you do not want to spend a lot of money you could get away with Euro Car Parts for both brakes and discs (at least at the rear.) I had them on for 2 years, no squeeks or anything.

Re: Brake Discs
Perhaps. I've put ECP discs on the front of two 9000s and the brakes felt as if they'd been oiled. Even though the ECP discs have only been on my dad's 9000 for about 4K miles, I'll be fitting Brembo discs and 1144 pads to the front next time I visit.

Re: Brake Discs
Well finally got round to fitting new Brembo discs and Mintex 1144 pads to the front. Rear discs and pads will be done fairly soon, but not urgent. Looking at my old receipts I found I already had Brembos on the front (40k miles ago) and Textar pads fitted.
The new pads were quite tight on the discs at first but have been suitably bedded in now and stopping seems to be much better now - how much of that is just due to new parts as opposed to better parts, I don't know, but so far I'm pretty pleased with the results.
Does anyone know what it means by "does not conform to EEC directive 71/320" which was on the pads box? (It also says the product is higher spec than the original product fitted - I should hope so, that's why I fitted them )
Next job is to fix the little valves on the wash bottle which decided to give up at the weekend

Re: Brake Discs
EEC directive?
I'm not sure, but think that there is a new directive that all replacement pads have to be +/- 10% of the original pads to be approved.
If pads are say +35% better, they fail....

Re: Brake Discs
I got my Brembo front discs from Tanvic in Loughborough a couple of months ago and they charged me £65 the pair. They have a web site with contact details should anyone be interested.

Yes, you've got the gist of it, Andrew. However, it only affects cars built after a certain date, which I think was after teh last 9000s were made. I spoke to the guy from Circuit Supplies about this a while ago and when I told him when my car was built he decided I didn't need the obligatory speech.

Re: Brake Discs
Just for information
German, Swedish & French Carparts sell Brembo front disks for £26.50 + del + vat
http://www.gsfcarparts.com
They also sell Pagid Fast Road for £45.00 + vat!!
Their not shown on their website you'll need to speak to the mail order department.

Any experience of these pads? I heard they weren't great, but I don't remember now where I heard it.

I've put about 5,000 miles on mine since fitting and they are pretty good. They stop fine (even with my worn disks). Very little dust for a fast road pad. There's a certain amount of brake squeal but I think that's unavoidable in this type of pad.
[edit] Oh, and they are spectacular stoppers on my C900 with new OE disks!
