Which Breakdown Cover? - not that we need it ;-)

    Hi all,

I'm am looking for some breakdown cover for my 94' Saab Aero. I have heard some bad things about the AA with an engine probe they use for diagnostics that can damage saab engines??!

Any 'Saab owner' reccomendations for AA, RAC, Greenflag? - or has anyone ever had problems...

I have heard that Green flag are good - especially with Saabs.

    Ta in advance.

thing to remember is that green flag, direct line etc all use independant contractors many of which are bluffers and not really fully trained (although some are very good at their job) AA/RAC are usually employed ( and paid) by the company and carry a lot more standard equipment and diagnostic tools than some joe bloggs that has to buy his own tools equipment etc..i have worked in the breakdown/recovery business and you wouldn't believe some of the cowboys with green flag contracts (although as stated above thereare many who are competent too)..

just my opinions but as they say 'you pays yer money you takes yer choice'

If you're in the SOC you get a decent discount on RAC membership (at least equal to the SOC's membership fee IIRC). Never had a prob with RAC so far.

    A couple of things:
If you take your car abroad at all (but especially if more than once per year) then it is worth looking beyond RAC/AA for cover - the cost of a tow off an autoroute could give your wallet a REALLY bad day and the price of continental cover with RAC/AA was extortionate last time I checked. I'm with ETA - no, not the lot that run around in basques blowing up things, but the Environmental Transport Association, who do a breakdown rescue and recovery scheme with year-round European options.

It's also worth looking at the GEM (Guild of Experienced motorists) scheme - which is a pretty good rate.

    Have a look at http://www.internationalbreakdown.com/

Also Shell do a breakdown recovery package which again is competitive for continental travel.
