    recently bought cs carlsson

Hello everyone, just found this bb board (after using TSN).
I have had the car for a fortnight now. I love it. its fantastic, but it isn't running quite right.
    I know that:
crankcase oil seal is gone (garage i bought car from fixing next friday)
that little rubber gearbox coupler needs replacing for a new one (already patched old up with nylon ties!)
The boost goes to edge of red/yellow, then tapers off - normal i think, but maybe get indie to look at it.
it doesnt feel that quick. 1st and 2nd gear are silly. i wont bother with them!
3rd is quick, but doesnt always throw you back in the seat
    4th is poor
    5th feels faster than 4th
Is anyone in manchester area with a cs carlsson, who would be willing to compare performance?
I followed an audi S3 onto motorway..he initially got away, then i kept up with him, slowly closing...i was foot to floor..i think he wasn't driving as hard as he could...should the carly be able to do this? I know it is very sad, immature etc etc to race somebody - but i'm trying to find cars that i feel the carly should be as quick as.
Anyway enough of my rants, excuse the grammar (think the spelling is ok tho'!)
    Paul

Hi Paul, it was me that left you the messages on TSN, welcome, Im sure you will find this board very helpful.

I have a carlsson, and if yours is running on song it should fly in all gears and haul in a S2.
If everything is running ok a manual boost valve will transform your performance, its the cheapest way of getting a lot of BHP for around £35 coupled with an uprated wastegate auctuator you can boost into the mid red and hold it longer, higher if your brave enough.A few people on here have fitted them and love them, a few will try to put you off, its down to personal choice, I have run one for a couple of years, use optimax and your ok.

Anyway there are lot of techy guys on here that will point you in the right direction

    Welcome to the board Paulmanchester!

You Carly should pull well into the red. My 160,000 miler old shape 2.3 Carlsson gets at lease half way into the red.

Acceleration in all gears should be at least good - if I catch the speed right, 4th gear is awesome.

Richard Elliot isn't too far from you - he may be worth a call....

mpen - thanks for the invite to here!
My cs carlsson is definately underperforming - just come up to edinburgh again, thought it was ok, seemed quick, but was silly and raced a beemer 520i
100-120, i was in 5th (so could have dropped down a gear) but he didnt just pull away, he absolutely obliterated me! we were going up hill in the lakes..(M6).you probably know rthe roads too! Either
    a) he was in 4th gear, but even so it should have been a close thing
    B) he had a different beemer and stuck the 520 badge on:-)
    c)my car is slooooooooooow!

    Help

    Re: recently bought cs carlsson

I hope you don't mind me asking all these questions - i'm new to turbbo saabs (had an old 2.3i - old, grey and tired!)
    Things I have done:
Spark plugs, checked/adjusted to 1.1mm - ngk ones, correct for car, cant remember offhand exact model of 'em
checked vacuum hoses( that i could find)
replaced a couple of hoses that were old/split
checked air filter is ok, it is
    checked wastegate is moving
checked apc solenoid valve buzzes/clicks, it does
checked dump valve holds vacuum - it does
thats it all i can remeber offhand, anything else i needto check????????

Also, boost goes to edge of top end of staggered line, then falls away (on journey today noticed it falls a long way occasionally, almost to 2/3rd up yellow (base boost???))

    Thanbks again
PS maybe go see this guy in glossop, although in edinburgh for a few days - anyone know of a good garage(indie) up here???
    cheeres

Oh dear! This is quite serious indeed! A 520 should be a speck in your rear view mirror. Can anyone help this man?

If the Beemer beat you so convincingly, I suspect it wasn't a 520. As I said, my 2.3 Carlsson boosts about half way into the red (beyond the broken lines).

Most the stuff you've suggested is the sort of stuff this may be. Can anyone else confirm if it's worth fitting a bleed valve / Dawes device to cut out the APC in case that is stopping the boost? Some of the turbos can develop hairline cracks, though this won't necessarily affect the boost.

There is an Edinburgh specialist mentioned here

Hope that helps, and hope you get your Carlsson sorted! (Hope it's a cheap cure too)..

kevin, thats what i thought too! I couldn't believe it!
humbled by a beemer 520i oh dear!
i think its time to go see a specialist!
Then maybe a manual boost control, just worried about knock - not sure i can afford to fill up all the time with super unleaded!

Yes I know the roads! I don't really know what a Carly should do but my 2.3 LPT will top comfortably top 120 around there (I meant 70 officer ). I'd have thought a Carly should better that. Not that I suggesting it's either big or clever to break the speed limit... Sometimes you just want to know what a car can do.

The car's got new plugs, oil, hoses etc. The only mod, if you can call it that, is a JR freeflow filter and I run either 97 RON or Optimax when I can get it.

I agree with Kevin Mc's suggestion: take it over to Richard Elliot's. Also have a look at these sites if you haven't already Electric Dream 9000 Quasi's

im thinking about a jr filter - just under £40 i have seen 'em...any good?K&N maybe?
I could have gone past 120, but after been humbled by a 520i i was crying so hard, the tears made the seeing the road difficyult(or that could just have been the typical lakes weather!)

    Re: recently bought cs carlsson

Most people argue JR just as good as K & N but without the snob value price tag. I got mine atElkparts I have the JR in both the 900 and 9000 and certainly feel the difference in throttle response

    Re: recently bought cs carlsson

Hmmm a carlsson out run by a 520... not good! My 9-5 lpt can do 520's.......!!!

I got my JR filter from Elkparts.... think everyone will agree that they are hard to beat on service and price...

    Re: recently bought cs carlsson

jr filter sounds good!if i wanted the snob value i would have bought a beemer 520!!!!!!!!!(although on todays performance i maybe should have!
When i finally get the problems sorted, i will maybe want to tune/tweak/improve.
    upgraded apc box?
    Manual boost control?
    definately jr filter
Is the carly suspension ok for slight power increases?I know the brakes are a little poor - rear discs need replacing in next few months, so a performance/value choice?Pads?
    Again sorry for the questions!!!

    Re: recently bought cs carlsson

A Hi flow air filter will only give you 2/3 BHP

You need to get this to a tech, it will be worth it......but it sounds like your licence will go quicker than the carlsson
