Cherished Registrations
Hi, can you settle and arguement for me please
I own a car with a cherished registration, if it gets stolen and not recovered, or the car is written off in an accident, what happens to the registration?
For example say the cars worth £5k and the plate worth another £5k, surely the insurance co will only pay out on the car's value, not the plate
Thanks Chris

Re: Cherished Registrations
You should be able to retain the reg from the DVLA.
Give the DVLA a ring and ask them, can't see an insurance company paying out for a reg number.

Re: Cherished Registrations
Thats what I thought, or the salvage company get a big fat bonus
I'll try and email them...........good idea Leon

Re: Cherished Registrations
Ok on the DVLA website it says:
Stolen:
If your stolen vehicle had a 'cherished mark' you can normally reclaim it if the vehicle has still not been found after 12 months and if certain requirements can be met. For more information see booklet INF 46 'Registration numbers and You'. Or you can write to Cherished Transfer Section, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BW.
Total Loss:
In the event of scrapping or total loss, you have a cherished mark you wish to keep, you must transfer or retain it before you dispose of the vehicle. If you do not do this you will lose your entitlement to that number. For more information read booklet INF 46 'Registration numbers and You'.
Ok now I know, thanks

Re: Cherished Registrations
Hi all,
What about insuring the reg No. ? surely this is possible, thought you could insure almost owt these days !!!!!
Cheers Jim.

Re: Cherished Registrations
Jim that was what the arguement was all about.
A decidedly dodgy cab driver, half soverieign ring and Ford Scorpio, said he has a Lambourghini (as most cabbies do!), and the plate is insured for £3,500 in case the car gets stolen or written off
Having read the DVLA stuff above, his insurance company must have had a very good laugh

Cheers Jim.

Re: Cherished Registrations
The thing to remember is that the DVLA always owns the registration. All you are buying is the right to use it, subject to their terms.
One of the terms is that you keep paying the road tax/vehicle duty. If you don't pay, you could lose the right to use the number and they will sell that right to someone else.

You had me worried for a moment, Cosmic - I thought something untoward had happened to your car

Re: Cherished Registrations
As a left footnote, whilst on the way to see about a month ago, I caught sight of a vehicle with the reg OLD811L in his vicinity.
As a right footnote, what is the point of a cherished numberplate anyway?

Re: Cherished Registrations
Ok. I was only playing devil's advocate. But why would I want to impress the neighbours anyway? (He said with 3 Saabs parked outside his and their front doors )

Re: Cherished Registrations
So was I really. I was never in favour of them in general, always advocating that an anonymous hard to remember number was more advantageous.
And then my wife and family bought me one as a surprise birthday present
