Just noticed a strange growling noise when I sat idling in a traffic queue this morning. It varies with engine speed but stops if I engage the "econ" button on the Climate Control, which suggest a bearing in the compressor?
    Anyone got a better idea?

Sounds like your pretty much there....

Could be A/C compressor, low or even high gas?
Possibly idler pulleys, with the extra load on them with A/C running.

I had exactly the same problem, always worse at weekends and silent in the week, turned out to be the wife in the passenger seat!
