    Forthcoming Graduated Vehicle Excise Duty

Brand new cars registered after the 1st March 2001 will be taxed in a different way. The Govt. is introducing graduated vehicle excise duty - this means that you pay road tax based on the CO2 emissions of your vehicle.

Information from DVLA can be found at: http://www.dvla.gov.uk/gved/gved.htm
For the pricing depending on emissions look at: http://www.dvla.gov.uk/gved/howmuch.htm
and to see how much CO2 emitted by Saab models take a look at: http://www.coidigital.net/dvla/car_search.htm .

Do you think that this is the right way forward to tax cars, especially since the 25 year rolling exemption of classic cars was stopped two years ago?

The link to how much Co2 is emiited by Saab only covers the current Models/years.

I suspect this is yet another manifestation of the "Rip-Off" Britain syndrome much loved by the popular press!! And that the owners of older, taxable Saabs (i.e us!!) are gonna get shafted to heaven and back by artificially high emissions bands.

Given the amount of tax we pay every time we fill up with petrol there should be no 'road tax' whatsoever.
