    Whatever next?

Left work this evening Past protestors who don't approve of my line of work
Up Otley Road in Harrogate - unremarkable
turn left onto Harlow Park Drive - unremarkable
then onto Duchy Road - still unremarkable

No spontaneous bursts of the horn yet yep got it fixed

Turn left onto the A61 Ripon Road and then I start to sink

So 11 miles later, just able to barely peer over the steering wheel, I get home a little fumble in the dark and I could feel that something has broken.

So I need to fix my front driver's seat or get a replacement, ho hum. Should I look for a car with the Plush velour trim and replace my interior do you think?

    Re: Whatever next?

did you fix the horn yourself? What was the exact problem?

Regarding the seat, if it is just the webbing that has gone you can get repair kits for the purpose to restore the seat to supportive position. Easy to fit if you have a lacky called Cartwright to do it for you Santeria589 has also done this job.

    Re: Whatever next?

    hi /john
I think I fixed it - I took away the contact that appeared to have come loose, taking the brutal option, but I still have two pads.....

Where could I get the webbing from? it seems like the webbing has gone, recent experience has meant I'm quite adept to taking the seats out...

I was contemplating finding a car in breakers with Kontur patten in plush velour and replacing all the seats with GLE/turbo trim. There's also looking for rear belts too......

I guess it's time to take Vicky the Vectra out of the garage where she has mostly been lurking since the 99 went back on the road..

I think Elkparts sell the seat kits.

Alas no It's just that I notice things about seats 'cos I seem to get that sinking feeling in most cars I've owned.

    Re: Whatever next?

Indeed Elkparts do sell the seat repair kit and it's childsplay to fit despite the badly photocopied instructions (to the point of being illegible). If you can find a new interior then go for the GLE trim if poss. Easier to find and fit, but still a bit fiddly - book a whole day for that job as you will no doubt get carried away with cleaning all the bits that the seats cover up. Did I say rust? No.

ps. If you get the seat repair kit, ignore the need for a 'puller' type tool and use some string, a metal bar and a friend with strong arms. You'll see what I mean!

believe it or not, those are the exact same kits supplied to Saab GB who would charge you £35 for the pleasure of selling one to you!

Yes, they'd probably charge their own mothers for a brochure too. Probably a photocopied one at that.

Elkparts out of kit at present Will hunt round for appropriate donor cars in case one becomes available - want seat fixed before next trip into Leeds (Indeed I pass through the area that makes Chechnya and Nigeria seems very peaceful places )

    No rust on my car

Bane of me life those pesky seat hammocks. Best solution I've come up with is cushions - with the Brucie Bonus of being able to turn them over when the sunroof leaks and they get wet

When this has happened in the past to me, I've cut a slab of chipboard to the right size, and slotted that in underneath, resting on the front and rear lips of the seat frame.

It is surprisingly comfortable for a week or two!

    Re: Whatever next?

Adopted a temporary measure - sticking a pillow under the seat - just the right firmness

Quite painful driving home last night trying to do the reverse of the buttock clench to stop myself from falling through the frame

I have a long trip tomorrow so I was determined to do it in the 99, not the Vectra, as she needs a long run and I have to go to Chapeltown in Leeds next week which is not a pleasant place.

    Re: Whatever next?

Kit arrived today to fix the seat (Cheers Elkparts )

You are right about the instructions though, I'd understand them a little easier if they were printed in Swahili rather than the poorly photocopied pictures......

Sunday is booked to do the repair!

Then wait for the next thing to go wrong!
