new turbo but strange boost?
After the turbo started to whistle - about a month before it went in a HUGE burst of smoke, I was still having boost up to the top of the orange section. Now a re-con has been fitted (supplied by my saab tech) and there is loads of torque ) But the guage peaks about 2mm into the orange from the white. when holding 35mph in fourth on a slight uphill gradient it sits half way up the white and when I floor it, power is there along with the whoosh behind the dashboard but the guage stays in the 1/2 white point until about 4000 revs at which point it goes up to the 2mm-into-orange position. Never did this before. AFAIK this isn't normal but can't thnk why it would be unless the guy who fitted it failed or forgot to connect something. there is no feeling of full boost until about 3500 revs and then there is piles of it. For info the whoosh was there before the turbo went and while it still boosted into the top of the orange. And before the turbo blew, any added throttle moved the APC guage well into the orange. The guage doesn't seem to be sticky, it just seems to be reading incorrectly. Has anyone any idea before I use up another favour with my saab tech which could be saved for a bigger qurstion?
thanx

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
Did you replace it with the same model turbo? I've been told the 900 carlsson had the Mitsubishi TEO5 part number 911903. Mine has this turbo, but i don't think i've ever experienced full boost since i've had the car(3yrs). When striping my car prior to it going to the bodyshop, i noticed the pipe from the solenoid valve to wastegate was split. I cut it back and refitted it, so now i can't wait to try it out, its been off the road 5 months

Fixing that split I think, should make a noticeable difference.

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
OK, its daylight now - not the best time, I know to launch an attack but I don't care. whatever resistance she throws at me, I'm going to fight my way to a result. I might be a while. If I succeed and break out oif the garage, I'll let you know what it was. If you don't hear from me again .....

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
leak in line going to gauge. My problem was at 'Y' piece under bonnet: right hand side between rocker cover and bulkhead, small rubber pipes join and one leg goes to gauge.

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
Tool it to the specialist today. He's going to adjust the w/g a bit tomorrow and look at it properly after Christmas. The wires to the solenoid need repaired too and the whoosh behnid the dashboard (cant remember what you cal the bit), will be fixed then too. "Nothing major or expensive to worry about". I like that especially at this time of year

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
YUM, slurp. had the w/g adjusted today. loads of torque although I have to remove lower dash over the hols, to get at the jobby behind the glovebox. still whoooshing. £20 quid for the part.
what I have found now (and which appears to be new occurrence) is that boost comes in from 2900 revs and until 5000 remains although it peaks and troughs between the two rev levels. Is this normal or more likely, something that will go when I've replaced the thing behind the glovebox? Or would further adjustment of the wastegate fix it?
cheers, hic.

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
Bambo, Happy Christmas.
You don't say whether the needle now shows more normal readings.
If it doesn't I still think you have a leak - perhaps where the pipe goes onto the gauge. The gauge is a pure pressure gauge - nothing clever - and just responds to the pressure it is given by the pipe.
Since pipes either perish or split (assuming they have not been properly installed) and especially with a split they can hold some pressure but open up as the pressure rises. You will know that you can easily make a device to bleed the brakes just by using a tube with a split in the side to let brake fluid out but no air back. I think you may be experiencing something similar.

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
Merry Christmas to you tooo.
Thje guage now reads 3/4 way through orange. Boost is as much seemingly as was there before the last turbo lost the plot. still whooshing and I noticed something else today which i think is related. started the car and sat for a couple of mins until the manifold leak quietened. with the temp guage about 1/4 into the green i moved off. About 1/2 mile later at an open stretch i floored it and can only describe the feeling as a stutter in the turbo system somewhere. felt like about 5 stutters per second, in between each of which the car was trying to go rapidly. left her to trundle withut acclerating for about another minute and did it again. the boost seemed only to chug now and by and large was on 'full' boost. when fully warm she now will pull alomst consistently from 2900 - 5000 revs.
does anyone know what is causing the 'stutter'?
Also, I have removed the concertina part in the console in front og the gearstick and the two screws under it. there are apparently two nuts undr the bonnet. (I can only see one when i look at my reflection in te windscreen) but cant find the others. I want to remove the lower dash to get rid of this increasiingly loud whooosh.
can u help? thanx
merry christmas to the rest of you too.

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
Hi bambo,
I had to take my lower dash off yesterday to change the twin pipes of the heater matrix ( they go into engine bay ), i also put in my new variable intermittent wiper relay while i was there. Anyway, the 10mm bolts ( one on each side ) are just under the two (i think) 17mm bolts that are for the upper dash. They might be covered over with Dum Dum (like putty) as mine were. You have to take the centre dash consul out in order to drop the lower dash. I also took the gearstick/handbrake consul out, not sure if you need to. The bolt behind the ashtray also holds the lower dash.
Regarding your turbo gauge reading.., if we say the colours are WHITE, YELLOW, then ORANGE, is your carlsson 3/4 in the orange?. Before i fixed that split in my wastegate hose, my carlsson was boosting to 1/2 in the yellow (now i think basic boost! ), but now ( without really pusing it ) it boarders end yellow/just touching orange, but i'm not sure of rpm. I need to test on an open road and i'm going to Birmingham tomorrow so i'll let you know how it goes when i'm back.
Merry Christmas to one and all

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
I have misunderstood somenone somewhere. I have been looking under the bonnet although you seem to be describing ll is in car? I'll look again in daylight.
APC guage white/yellow/orange, then I'm in the yellow 1/2 wayish thru it.
I suspect/hope the valve behind dash is the cause.

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
Sorry bambo, the bolts are in the engine bay. If you look in the door hinge area you should see them. Sorry about the mix up, and yes its better in daylight, especially when re-fitting bolts and screws. I did mine by lamplight (not a good idea).
Good luck

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
Isn't daylight just brilliant? OK so I've got the console out and have found a pair of nuts in that galvanished goldy colour under the corners of the widscreen. Both the same size and screwed(?) through the bulkhead towards the dash board. they also hold in place an oval (best description i could think of) of the smae colour against the bulkhead. hope thats sufficiently descriptive to identify which ones I'm talking about.
Are these the right ones? I'd hate to undo them and the engine fall out (Ha!) but I dont see any others that could be them.
I can remember now why i didn't become a mechanic. I've already cut my hand to shreds on the edge of the plastic of the console.

Re: new turbo but strange boost?
I think the bolt heads you're refering to are for the upper dash (two 17mm bolts on each side holding a oval-ish plate. The 10mm nut you need is below these ( about 3-5in away). Just to clarify; with the bonnet up looking in the door hinge area of the inner wing, bottom corners of the windscreen. Remember.. they might be covered over with Dum Dum ( a sort of putty ). Once you've done the job, at least you would have gained some experience. Over the years i've always had a go at repairs and that how i managed to near totally strip my car for the re-spray, helped with the preping of the shell and totally re-fitted eveything (maybe i was just eager to keep the price down) and i'm no mechanic.
Again i wish you good luck
Andrew
