20 odd mpg in town
To continue this a little, while I understand that weather and driving conditions make a huge difference, I still feel that it seems a little low.
Ylee Coyote suggested airfilter, but Andy @ Neobros told me that the "lifetime Filter" he fitted is totally maintenance free.
Where is it anyway please?
Looking on the web I found this
http://www.cleanburn.co.uk/
They have a small widget to insert somewhere. Has anyone clever here had any experience of this?
Thanks as always for your help

Hi mate
As far as I know lifetime filters are not maintenance free....rather, you do need to maintain them by cleaning them at roughly the sort of intervals you would normally replace a dsiposable filter.

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
I've had 4 9000s and never had anything better than 23mpg after a service dropping to 20mpg nearing a service, I could get around 29/31 on a long run keeping it around 70/80

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
My experience is the same as mpen's in that I rarely get an indicated mpg higher than 24 (though I've never tried a 'brim to brim' test).
Mine is automatic, which obviously doesn't help. For a heavy car used mostly for short journeys and low annual mileage, I think it's an acceptable trade off for a safe, comfortable, vehicle with a bit of class.

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
I just accept the 20-ish mpg from my Aero as a side effect of my 'spirited' driving style (and the cost pales into insignificance compared to the new gearbox, clutch, tyres and wheel bearings I've replaced in the last 20k miles...).
I could probably get much better mileage out of it but it does kind of make it pointless paying group 9 billion (or whatever they charge me for living in a manchester postcode) insurance just to drive gently enough not to need shares in shell oil.

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
Just to add my experiences with my 2.3 lpt auto.
I get as low as 18 MPG around town on short journeys. However on a run I can get the computer up to around 35 MPG. I always calculate brim to brim and in the last 6 months I have got between 26 and 31 each time, averaging out at 28.
Incidentally, I find the fuel computer is out by 10% (optimistic) all the time.
Hope this helps

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
SID read 25.7mpg in our 9000CSE FBT manual doing purely urban driving over lenghty periods. Rose to 34 on pure Motorway work. No modifications. Mathematics verified read out.

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
My 2 litre auto always wavers between 22 - 23, although i am rather heavy right footed and on motorways i rarely do below 90mph.

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
On my 2.3 FPT auto I see 23ish round town and 27 on motorway runs - but only if I keep to 75, any more and the numbers start to plumet... Spirited driving takes it down to borderline 21/22mpg

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
Driving around town depends on how busy the roads are, how often you have to stop, how long you drive for and whether you ever get out of first gear.
My 9 mile trip to work from North London to Central London (if I don't leave before 7am) takes me 1hour and 20minutes and I average 14mpg !!! Most of the time, the car moves about 50metres before stopping for another minute or so.
If I leave before 7am, the same trip takes about 25 minutes and I get a greatly improved 24mpg.
Over the Christmas, I've been driving around Leeds City Centre - covered about 30 miles and got 26mpg. Obviously, Leeds is less busy and I'm not stopping every few seconds while I get cut up by white van drivers, BMWs and Mercs.
I've spent the last few days in Glasgow and needless to say I've been getting about 28mpg. the only thing stopping me from improving this are traffic lights.
So to be honest, I don't think anyone can say there's an absolute benchmark for how many mpgs you can get as we're not really scientific enough about it.
However, I can say that inner city driving can produce between 13mpg and 28mpg depending on where you are and the driving conditions.
A good motorway run (with no jams) reaching between 70mph and 80mph for a top speed gives about 34mpg.
The best I got recently was 36mpg doing 60mph up the M1 for 80 miles. I was doing a bit of Sunday driving...honest.

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
lifetime filters such as k+n or itg need to be maintained as reported
washed and re-oiled simple process but needs to be done
Much is said about MPG and it does vary from car to car
Mine seems to be particularily good and it helps living in a relatively jam free country
however the manual aero seems to have the best fuel efficiency
I have seen over 45 on a motorway run before I started "breathing " on it
even now I can get the best part of 35 on the motorway dropping to the mid 20's in the town
so I typically average around 30 mpg (confirmed brim to brim )
not bad for a 400 hp car !!
As you go down in capacity and factor in automatic the consumption increases ...with the 2.0 i auto being the worse.
living on the south coast with its incessant jams could lose you another 3 or 4 mpg
I would give the air filter a clean (a K+N kit costs under a tenner and does a few cleans)
check the vacuum hoses
and if all looks ok I would just accept it

Re: 20 odd mpg in town
As Ylee says, the power to weight on the 2L,i makes it a bit heavy on petrol. I average around 32MPG for MY normal day to day drive.(I live in the country and work is on an estate outside the city). If I do a fair bit of driving round town it drops to between 27 and 29MPG, Motorways around 35, and I have a heavy right foot. When I got I could only get 16 to 18 MPG, the low mileage was largely due to neglect, old filters, plugs, etc worn tyres cracked hoses and so on, a regular plethora of minor niggles which added to the fuel consumption. I suppose I am trying to say that there is no such thing as maintenance free, unless it's a throw away component.
PS The thing which reduced my fuel consumption the most was lowering and stiffening the suspension.

That's about 30-33 MPG in UK gallons.
