Gearbox Problem ???
Hello,
Don't know if this is a big issue or not but I seem to have a problem with my gearbox as follows ( car is a 96 cse 2.0 lpt ):
Every so often it won't go into any gear. What I have to do is stop the car, leave it for a minute or so and then try again by which time the gears engage. This usually happens when I'm starting to drive off but it has happened when the car is in motion.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
ps- car is still on orig clutch and has done 146k.

Re: Gearbox Problem ???
Hi, it could well be the rubber coupling on the selctor shaft that has failed. Try moving the gearstick L-R whilst in gear. You should feel a definite hard limit. If not and there's excessive springy movement, it's probably the coupler.

Re: Gearbox Problem ???
Sounds like it's probably the clutch to me.
Is the clutch pedal firm during this?
You saying you can't get any of the 6 gears?

I was starting with easy, cheap fix...

Re: Gearbox Problem ???
Yes, I can't get any of the 6 gears. I have also found that reverse is the easiest one to select when I'm trying to get it back into gear.
The clutch pedal is no heavier than normal when this happens.
Think I'll just go down to the car park now and try out Marks first suggestion....
Back from car park - there is about 3 inches L-R play in the gear lever when gears engaged so hopefully it's not a clutch problem.
Then again its still got the original clutch at 146k miles .....

Re: Gearbox Problem ???
I had this happen to me on one of my old 9000 turbo @ 140 k
It turned out to be air in the circuit which can be bled out fairly simply...
I would try this first...(cheap !!)
