Thread: The bullet has been bitten

    The bullet has been bitten

Well In a moment of madness I decided to bite the bullet and well and truly batter my credit card...
After much deliberation I have decided to TOTALLY upgrade the audio system...
As my dear late Mum used to say "your dead a long time"..

On Saturday morning my car is booked in at an audio specialist in Wigan to have "everything" replaced...
All the speakers.. Doors, Dash and the addition of 6 x 9"s in the rear parcel shelf.. This includes Dynamatting the doors and rear shelf!
Also they are adding a 12" sub box which I am assured is removable for using the boot as a boot!
They are adding a 4 channel amp which they have assured me they can fit in the cubby hole in the boot where the original amp was. Incidentally when you are having the head unit the original amp is NOT needed and can be removed..
Lastly..... I really went a bit nuts and agreed to have a Alpine head unit installed. One aspect I like about the new head unit is that it has built in Blue tooth and so I wont be needing the Parrot system which is installed. The model of head unit is CDEW296BT
I quite like that its at least slightly retro looking....At least in comparison to the big screen jobbies.
They will be totally re wiring the speakers and wiring direct to the battery a heavy power lead.

Originally he suggested to forgo the 6 x 9's as the 12" sub in the boot would be "adequate"!
The reason I asked for them is so that there is at least some decent bass on those occasions when the sub is removed.

Don't ask what it costs.. I don't want to dwell on that!
Put it this way the time is now 3.30am as I post this !!

As a certain Mr Royce once said "Long after the price has been forgotten, the quality will be remembered".

    Very nice!

I'd be interested to hear how all this looks/sounds when done.

I've done similar but did it by myself. 10" sub, 2 6x9's in the shelf, amp in the cubbyhole, upgraded the door speakers and dynomat all round. I never got round to the dash as it scared me haha. I also kept the stock headunit as I have the Saab Satnav unit.

    Godber I salute you..
You are braver than I am in tackling such a job..
Can I ask if you are pleased with the upgrade in sound?

    Hi aerojon

Everything is "Planet Audio" (except the head unit which is Alpine).
I am having it all installed by these people:
    http://www.kandmacoustics.co.uk/

I have chosen them for the following reasons..

    1. They are the only "professionals" that actually bothered to answer my e-mails!
    2. I have phoned them now 4 or 5 times and have spoken to 3 members of their staff. They all seemed VERY confident and knowledgeable and answered all my questions in a way the inspired my confidence
    3. I went there for a consultation and pre install chat a week before the fitting to physically show them the car and to discuss options etc. They totally put my mind at rest and he knew the cars quirks more than I did..
    4. Mike (one of the 2 partners) was very good at matching up which amp works best with which speakers.. He said that to select the right components really gave you much more for your money.. He said carefully matched components are like going up a level in price.

The amp is as far as I know one of these:
    http://www.planetaudiousa.com/produc...udio-bb1200-4/

The speakers by the way are component speakers with cross overs..
    Tweeters in the dash..
Mids in the doors (inc the dynamatt)
Mid / Bass 6 x 9's with cross over in the rear shelf
12" sub in custom built box in the boot.
Incidentally just have a read below about their Sub box design...
    http://www.kandmacoustics.co.uk/prod...ss-box-design/

I asked him why they specialize in a brand I have not heard of before..
He said " The short version...Originally we dealt with all the big players in car audio. Then one day this rep for Planet Audio appeared and persuaded me to have one of their subs to try out. It was in the shop for a while and then a customer came in with a faulty sub which he wanted sorting under the warranty. I suggested he had the Planet Audio whilst his Brand X sub was sent away to be checked by the company that made it. He came back after a week or so and asked how much the Planet audio sub was and if he could just have that instead...
This sort of thing happened several times and gradually the word spread at just what good value Planet audio was..
We ended up ordering more and more of their stuff. Today we are a main dealer for them.. The stuff sells itself"
I asked if Planet Audio was reliable..
He said "In all the years we have dealt with them we have only had 2 faulty amps"!

So that is why I have agreed to have a system installed whose make I hadn't heard of.

Can't say fairer than that! I have never heard of them either but with everything you have listed, it would give me confidence also.

I am very happy with the upgrade, I had a Sub in my first car and never went back to stock set up on any car since. Its addictive, once you've experienced what it can sound like everything else will be inadequate.

2 Bits of advice from experience though.

Don't run the RCA Cables on the same side as the power cables. Its a ball ache because it means you running RCA down the drivers side and power down the passenger side. The problem you will face if you do not, when you have no music playing you will hear the canbus noise through your 6x9's "tick tick, tick tick, etc"

Secondly, tell them to go as crazy as they want/can with the Dynamat. Saab's can vibrate a lot especially after you've taken them apart to do the install.

Thank you godber for your excellent advice.
Because of your advice i phoned them up.
They reassured me thats the way they do all their installations.

Thanks again for the heads up mate.

I think as most of us are waiting for is the end result .
You are doing the right thing , by having the whole installation done professionally.
And that as for as I can understand, everything is being replaced and that stuff dynamatrinix being installed ( or what ever it's called ) .
It's a bold ( and maybe an expensive) step . But you have the reassurance that they know there trade , and they have done it all before .
It maybe just me ( well it is just me ) but I'm deaf in one ear , and I've got the infotainment 150 .
But as it stands it's far superior in sound to any of the Saab systems I've had before
But as I said it's just me .
