    Alternator "upgrade"?

    Hi All,
My car is a 2008 1.9 TTiD Aero

From what I gather the alternators (denso) on these cars are not the last word in reliability..
Does anyone know if there is a direct replacement Bosch or Lucas unit?
Mine hasnt fasiled (Yet) but forwarned in forarmed...

    Any ideas ?

Hello . Yes Bosch do a direct replacement . At the moment they are coming out at £300 .
You could try local auto factors ( euro car parts, GSF .etc ) to see if you can whack them down on price , if. It tgen send in Mike Tyson, e always gets a good deal down at my local tescos .
Also I would recommend changing the tensioner at the same time . Oooooo and the alternator belt .
But as you say it's all working , butter to know now .

Have you looked to see which one you have on your car?
I felt pretty silly sourcing a Denso when I actually had a Bosch on the car all the time.....its a 57 plate.

Also the wiring is different so if you have a Denso and want to fit a Bosch then some creativity will be needed
as there is a two pin plug on the regulator for the Bosch.

The part number for the Bosch is 93191922

Echo above, I'm reckoning it'll be a Bosch alternator, but it'll need checking. My car is a 2008 built car.

I was lucky, I got a brand new 'old stock' off the shelf 140 amp unit from a Vauxhall dealership for £120 off ebay. Bargain considering the retail price at the time was nearly £400.

Thank you all for answering so quickly.
I have just had the cam belt and water pump done by the local Saab specialists in Kirkham and I asked him to see what sort of alternator my car has.
He unfortunately confirmed it is a Denso unit.
Had a look with the torch tonight and it looks an absolute pig to get to !
Only had the car 10 days and I have to say its bloody gorgeous.

At least you had the for sight to have the cambelt done , that's normally the first that gets asked around here .

If you're handy with tools save yourself the hundreds of pounds and buy a diode and brush replacement kit from ebay for around £30. search 'westronics' (also on you tube) and you'll find the product and instructions on how to change.

The denso alternators on the saabs are duff and always fail eventually. It is a pain in the ar$e to get it out of the engine bay though, but it does squeeze up and out. Tip: Get a high temp soldering iron too...

They won't show any problems. They just die out of the blue when diodes are fried. Around 100k miles is when they could start to fail, sometimes sooner.

    Re: Alternator "upgrade"?

When mine stared to fail it started with power steering failure ,first things in the morning , start up move not working , switch off re-start , working , then it moved on to battery light intermittently showing , then , it moved onto every known failure showing on the SID, by that point I knew alternator had gone wobbly .
But as Raj says about 100.000 miles , mine was 98.000 .

    Re: Alternator "upgrade"?

I bought a el cheepo' off of ebay (Circa £80) it lasted six months ....... Kinda serves me right really ....... Then I had the original rebuilt by a specialist ...... Twas £50 for that ...... OK the reasonable solution is spending £300 maybe...... But giving a guy £50 who does nothing all day but refurb alts on a whole variety of engines seemed to me to be perfect...... He gave me the old bits to look at after & pointed out what was what ....... So I got a free education too ......Which I probably needed
