I have a 99 9-3 SE 4 door hatchback. When the car is idling and also when driving it, it's making a knocking noise. It seems to be coming from one of the pulleys that the serpentine belt is on. I have inspected the belt and I can't see any breaks or cracks in it and I tried to move the pulley itself to see if maybe it was loose and it didn't seem to be. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? Thank you!
Have you checked whether the noise goes away when you 'unload' the belt. Put a socket extension in the square socket in the tensioner and pull forwards while the engine is running. This takes the load off the belt so, if the noise goes away it must be related to the belt and its fittings.
Assuming it does then check all the pulleys, I would guess that one of the idler pulleys is partially seized.
Thank you for all the help, It ended up being one of my pulleys. Had it replaced and good to go!
