inlet manifold and swirl actuator issues
Hi guys im new to this forum i have bought a saab 9-3 1.9 tid 150 vector sport 2005 it started when bringing her home black smoke cleaned out EGR valve which was replaced back in december 2011 and noticed swirl bar was off i bought new inlet manifold and actuator motor reinstalled by my mechanic but after all that the bar still does not move even under revs there is a bit more boost but ffrom 2200 rpm upp nothing below these revs pluged computer in to see any fault codes it came up with code p0400 which indicates EGR valve but the swirl bar is not working do any of you guys know of any possible reason the swirl bar is not moving? It shows no fault code at all.

Re: inlet manifold and swirl actuator issues
The only thing I can think of is the actuator which operates the swirl flaps at the end of the inlet manifold could be broken. I was lucky when I had my manifold changed mine was working. Think a new actuator costs about £120, though I've not looked.
Does the EGR valve operate correctly? When mine broke the solenoid part was furred up and hence didnt open and shut the valve correctly.

Re: inlet manifold and swirl actuator issues
Hi iv checked the conections they are all fine moves the swirl valve by hand does the EGR valve control the swirl valves signal? The EGR valve seams fine the error code that comes up is po400 which indicates EGR but that dont explain the swirl valve not working but surely if the swirlvalve motor dont work there will be a error code?

Re: inlet manifold and swirl actuator issues
I had the error code P0400, this refers to a solenoid problem, I think. The solenoid should move smoothly, when mine was broken it was notchy and furred up.
I guess as the EGR valve and the inlet manifold (along with the particulate filter) are all to do with the emissions of the car they will all work in unison. I think the motor should move the flaps when you rev the engine.
I'm not sure about what code comes up when the swirl valves aren't working. My car was in the garage getting the air con fixed (there was a break in the wiring loom) when the mechanic noticed the rod had fallen off the flaps. I hadn't noticed any difference in the engine's performance so hadn't even looked at the manifold, it was only when they were doing the work they noticed the rod.

Re: inlet manifold and swirl actuator issues
OYeh thanks for that this car is so confusing power is better but in no way 150 bhp turbo starts to kick in at 2500 rpm im sure its ment to come on before that or maybe im wrong i thinki have to go se a diagnostic tech tomorow to see whats working or not

Re: inlet manifold and swirl actuator issues
Hi,
If there is no low down power then it sounds like the EGR is not working properly. When I had mine changed it felt like a new car, you can definitely tell the difference. Have a search in the 9-3 forum and there is loads of advice and tips in there.
My car is great but it has had its fair share of problems so if you need any advice just let me know.
