    2.2 tid crap fuel consumption

    Can anyone help???

I have a 9-5 2.2 TID (03) which currently and consistenly reads 32ish MPG. I know there must be something wrong. If I try really hard I can get 40MPG but with the slightest bit of turbo over a 150mile trip it will go back to 32ish MPG.

Its been serviced regularly FSSH upto 86K. Currently has 94K on the clock. Last serviced at 90K (when i bought it). Had new oil, oil filter and air filter. All good stuff.

Non of the brakes are sticking. All wheels run free. The SID is using UK Gallons etc. Tires have high air pressure (40psi), all good Pirrelli P600s.

The Engine management light isn't on and the ODB2 reader says no faults.

Purley to eliminate all angles I'm goin to pressure test the turbo pipes and clean the breathers and EGR stuf, but i'm confident these are all ok.

Has anyopne else got some decent suggestions to try?

    Help greatfully appreciated.

    Cheers

    Ben

What does the engine temperature gauge read under normal running? If it's not around the mid point, you may have a thermostat problem which can make a significant difference. I get about 36 average, mainly short runs and town driving with an occasional motorway run. Will get about 42 at a legal cruise. But I have a Steinbauer P-box, and I do sometimes use it...

My old 2.2TID got roughly the same, our current 9-3 1.9TiD 150 is getting around 34.8 MPG.

My 9-5 Aero around 22 MPG.

In my experience Diesel will only give decent mileage if the car gets to warm up and the journeys are 10 miles +.

Engine temperrature takes a while to get to the mid point but is at what I would expect.
From what I'm hearing it sounds like I'm getting similar to you guys. GUTTED. I was hoping to get 40MPG without even trying and 45+ trying to stick to the speed limit.
Personally I still think there is something wrong. I've looked through the forums and alot of people are getting 40+.
In hunt for more MGP without driving like a Pensioner I think I will have to look at tuning. I can't bear the thought of gewtting rid of the car.

That said the 3.0TID I had before the 2.2 did 40+MPG without trying. Hence my frustration.

Mine's doing 47-49 mpg mixed driving no probs.
First thing you should do is change the air filter, mine went from 41 to 47 after changing it.
Engine temperature is irrelevant, it's a diesel.

    The Sarge,

What year and how many miles is on yours?
What air filter have you put in? I did a filter change 4-6K ago but it was a patent FRAM filter.
Also what oil are you running it on. I have a sneeking suspision the oil isn't as good as I thought it was!
    Cheers

    04 plate and 143000 miles.
The air filter is a standard item from my local Partco factor, nothing fancy.
Oil is fully synthetic vauxhall branded.

Re: 2.2 tid crap fuel consumption

Hi there! I have a pretty high consumption on mine as well... I have a 2002 model with 190000 km. I got it in the winter so I thought the bad consumption came from both cold and studded tires, but it didn't change anything when I mounted the summer tires on it... I'll try the oil and the filters but if there's any other tricks...
    Thanks!

I was wondering, is that the appropriate cleaner for the MAF?

Have your tyre pressures checked by your local tyre specialist. 40psi is probably on the high side, 30 - 32 psi is probably more like what should be in your tyres. As we all know, correctly inflated tyres will help fuel economy, under or over inflated tyres will detract from your economy. Try some fuel injector cleaner, such as Redex or Wynne's, to see if this helps. Also, when you are on a long journey, try resetting your fuel computer by pressing and holding the clear button for about 4 seconds until it beeps at you and shows clear on the display. After about half an hour or so of driving at a steady speed it will give you a more up to date average. In my old 1998 2.2 tid I was averaging 40 mpg around town constantly, up to 44mpg on a run.

For what its worth my last car was a 93 (Nine Three) 2.2Tid and over the final 4090 miles of my ownership it averaged 47.19 mpg. 148,000 on the clock when sold, serviced by the book.
