Turbo stop working, restart car and it works! 9-3 150bhp Tid Sportswagon
Hi
New here so please bear with me.
Warning light has been on and off recently, took off the EGR and cleaned it which helped for a bit as did the MAF sensor.
But now light on most of the time, and turbo stops working, turn off and on again then it works! MPG down to mid 30's aswell, spoke to garage on the phone, said it sounded like a new manifold is possibly required which is costly, would you agree? Or any other thoughts?
thanks

Re: Turbo stop working, restart car and it works! 9-3 150bhp Tid Sportswagon
i cant see it being the manifold as this wouldnt stop the problem just by switching on/off
I would be looking at boost pipes, and sensors , sounds like its going into limp home mode, it would pay to get the ECU read if there is a EML on
do you do only short journeys as the DPF may be clogged too , although I think the car normally tells you if its specifically that problem

It could be the small vacuum pipes leading to turbo.Remove engine plastic cover, then look on top of radiator and you will see a valve with small pipes in and out of it,these perish so follow them back and check. This valve sometimes gets clogged or goes faulty this is the electric side that controls vacuum to turb0

Wow, posted this on another Saab forum twice and got not response!
Great advice, i'll look into it, think i'll buy a code reader off ebay, get the feeling i'll be getting a fair bit of use out of it!
Yes short journeys, school run etc which i'm sure isn't helping
will report back.....

Had a look at the pipes on the radiator valve which look ok but difficult to get to al the way along so not 100%.
Think i'll buy a code reader, seen this one on ebay, its cheap and cheerful, will it work on a 9-3?

So plugged in the reader of ebay - no faults found!
Think I might take the EGR valve off again and soak it overnight in Gunk? might help?

hi
dont mean to hijack your thread but did you resolve your problem, as i have the same fault, my turbo just stopped working, no noise or grinding, just stopped, so if you could let me know how you got on that would be very helpful.

By "turbo stopped working" i am guessing your car is in 'limp mode' this is an ecu setting which limits the revs/power, etc to save the engine from damage. This come on when something is wrong.

Agreed with the moderators. You mean limp mode right ? Strange that no codes were stored as limp will store a code. Try another one ! From manifold the garage may mean inlet manifold it could be blocked if you are running the egr and oil vapour recirc which I'm guessing you are will gunk it up and cause a fault. It may not be the inlet but if the garage have said that as they have seen the engine and how prone our manifolds are for blocking up it sounds very plausible. I took mine off the other day cleaned and flowed the insides and wow what a difference it made. Mine wasn't even that bad but I still got a take away tub full of carbon and sludge out of it. But as always. Check codes check codes check codes
