IS IT THE GEARBOX ? PLEASE HELP ME!

I have a 9-3 Convertible aero 2001.

Pulled away from traffic lights and the car now appears to only go into first gear, I can't get it to go into any other gear. Had to drive home in first gear with hazards on, also noted a loud knocking sound. I managed to get the car into what must be reverse to get the key out. Have just been out to the car again, put the key in the ignition and depressed the clutch pedal which appears normal, but can't enage into any gear at all. The gearstick feels stuck in position.

I would be really grateful for any advise you could give me and possible diagnosis. I am a female driver and am not completely trustworthy when it comes to mechanics and garages.

has this just suddenly happened or have you noticed it getting hard to get into gear over time ?
if it's just suddenly happened it could be the shift linkage broke or disconnected which 9-3's suffer from or, if it's happened gradually it 'could' be the clutch master / slave cylinder that's gone , does the clutch pedel feel normal or is it spongy ? does it come all the way back up after you've pressed it ?
it would be helpfull if you have a friend that could get under the car to check the mounts as that could account for the knocking ..
